Pamex FTF940 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Pamex FTF Baron dummy knob have a working latch, or is it just a pull?
Pull only. A dummy knob is fixed trim for doors where only a pull is required, so there is no latch, no turn, and nothing that retracts. Typical uses are the inactive leaf of a pair of French doors, a closet or pantry door held shut by a ball catch or roller catch, and a false door face that needs to match the knobs on the rest of the openings. If you need the door to actually stay latched, you need a passage set instead, not this.
2) Will the Pamex Baron dummy knob cover the holes left by the knob I'm taking off?
The FTF Baron knob is built for the standard 2-1/8 inch cross bore with a 1 inch edge bore, which is the prep nearly every residential cylindrical knob already sits in. If the door you are working on was drilled for a standard bored knob, the trim goes back into the same holes with no new boring. Doors prepped for a mortise lock or for a bore other than 2-1/8 inches will not take it without a repair plate or a re-prep.
3) Is the Pamex FTF Baron knob handed? Do I need to know which way my door swings?
Non-handed, so the same part works on a left or right hand door with no field conversion and no need to specify swing when ordering. For a property manager stocking a few spares across a building, that means one part number fits every opening regardless of which way it swings.
4) What finishes does the Pamex FTF Baron dummy knob come in?
Three finishes: 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, and 622 matte black. Those are BHMA finish codes, so if the levers and knobs already on your other doors are specified 613 or 619 you can match the dummy trim to them by code rather than by eye. Matte black 622 is the one to pick for a modern build where the rest of the hardware is black.
5) Is a Grade 3 knob good enough for an apartment building?
ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Grade 3 is the residential duty tier, and this Pamex Baron knob is built and catalogued as residential hardware. For apartment interiors, closets, and the inactive leaf of a French door pair it is the right tier. For a commercial corridor, a school, or anything on a fire door in a facility spec, buyers usually step up: the Schlage A170 single dummy trim is Grade 2 heavy duty, and the BEST 6K Series single dummy trim is Grade 2 medium duty.
6) What are the alternatives to the Pamex Baron dummy knob if I need something different?
Depends what is pushing you off it. For a heavier commercial-grade dummy in the same bored-knob format, the Schlage A170 single dummy trim is Grade 2 and rated for 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors, which buys you a bit more thickness range. Staying residential, the Cal-Royal BA40 dummy knob from the Barrington series covers the same 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch range, and the Bravura Biloxi round-trim dummy knobset is a Grade 2 option. For a decorative solid brass look, Omnia makes the 434/0 and 442/00 traditional single dummy knobs, and Emtek offers dummy knobs in pairs, including the Hammered Egg and the Georgetown and Providence crystal knobs.
7) I need a knob on both sides of an inactive French door leaf. Is one Pamex FTF dummy enough?
One FTF Baron dummy covers one face. Doors that need a knob on both sides take two, or a product sold as a pair. Emtek lists its dummy knobsets as pairs, including the Arts and Crafts Hammered Egg and the Classic Brass Crystal Georgetown and Providence, so those come as two knobs in one order. Count faces, not doors, before you place the order.
8) What is the Pamex Baron knob made of?
Zinc die-cast, finished in oil rubbed bronze, satin nickel, or matte black. Zinc die-cast is the standard body material at the residential Grade 3 tier and takes plated and painted finishes well. Buyers who want solid brass for a high-visibility interior door are looking at a different class of product, such as Omnia's traditional solid brass dummy knobs.
9) Can I match a Pamex FTF dummy knob to the locking knobs already on my other doors?
The FTF Baron dummy shares the model family and the finish codes with the rest of the Pamex FTF line, so specifying the same finish (613, 619, or 622) puts matching trim on the closet or French door leaf that does not need to lock, next to entry and privacy functions on the doors that do. Order the dummy in the same finish code as the working sets and the openings read as one suite.
