Pamex FTF900 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Pamex FTF Baron knob lockset fit a 1-3/8 inch interior door, or do I need something else for a thicker exterior door?
Standard, the FTF Baron knobset covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, which takes in both common older interior doors and standard exterior doors. For anything thicker, up to 2-1/4 inches, an extension kit is available and has to be ordered with the lock. Door prep is a 2-1/8 inch cross bore with a 1 inch edge bore, so it drops into a standard bored prep.
2) Will the Pamex FTF knob lock latch into the strike plate already in my frame?
The FTF ships with a 2-3/8 inch backset latch and a 1/2 inch bolt throw, with a 2-1/4 x 1-3/4 inch round corner full lip strike in the box. If the frame already carries a round corner full lip strike of that size from an earlier residential knob set, the new latch lines up with it. A square corner strike or a 2-3/4 inch backset prep will not, and other latch and strike options can be ordered instead.
3) What keyway does the Pamex FTF entrance knob lock come with, and can I get it in Schlage?
Standard is a 5-pin Kwikset keyway in a solid brass cylinder. A 5-pin Schlage C keyway version is also available, which matters if you are keying a building alike to existing SC-keyed hardware. Specify the keyway on the order.
4) I am replacing a Kwikset keyed entry knob. Will the Pamex FTF go into the same holes?
Yes, if the existing prep is the standard bored layout: 2-1/8 inch cross bore, 1 inch edge bore, 2-3/8 inch backset. The Kwikset 400P-CP keyed entry knob we carry covers the same 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors at Grade 3, so a swap between the two is a like-for-like change. Order the FTF with the Kwikset keyway and existing keys can be rekeyed to it rather than reissued.
5) What keyed knob lock should I use on a commercial opening instead of a Grade 3 residential set?
Step up to a Grade 1 or Grade 2 cylindrical knob lock built for commercial traffic. The Corbin Russwin CK4851 is a Grade 1 entrance/office cylindrical lock with a Global knob and conventional cylinder, fitting doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The BEST 8K Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty entrance function knob lock with a single cylinder. The Dexter C2000 entry/office ball knob is Grade 2 and fits 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the same door range the Pamex FTF covers. The Pamex FTF is Grade 3 and catalogued for residential use.
6) What is the closest equivalent to the Pamex FTF Baron knob lockset in entrance/office function?
The Cal-Royal BER00 is the nearest match. Both are Grade 3 keyed knob locks in entrance/office function, and both fit 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The BER00 uses a Kwikset keyway, the same keyway family the Pamex FTF ships with as standard, so an existing KW-keyed building can be maintained across either part.
7) My door is thicker than 1-3/4 inches - which knob lock covers it without an extension kit?
Several keyed knob locks carry a thicker door range as standard. The Corbin Russwin CK4851 entrance/office lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The Deltana 3381 Egg Knob entry and Deltana 6171 Round Knob entry both cover 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The Falcon X101 covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, though it is a passage function with an interchangeable core rather than a keyed entry. The Pamex FTF fits 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch as standard with an extension kit available for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors.
8) What is the difference between an entrance/office knob and a storeroom knob lock?
On an entrance/office lock the outside knob can be left unlocked, and it is locked or released by key outside or turn-piece inside - which is how the Pamex FTF works. A storeroom lock keeps the outside knob permanently locked and entry is by key only, with no turn-piece. The Sargent 6G04 is a Grade 2 storeroom/closet knob lock with a single cylinder, and the Sargent 8XG04 is a Grade 1 heavy duty storeroom/closet knob lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset. Choose storeroom for a supply or mechanical room that must never be left unsecured.
9) Which knob locks carry a fire rating for a rated corridor door?
The Falcon W101 is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical knob lock in passage/closet latch function with a 2-3/4 inch backset and a fire rating. The Falcon X101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage knobset with an interchangeable core, also fire rated, covering 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors. Both are non-keyed passage function, so pair them with the rated opening's own latching requirement rather than treating them as keyed entry sets. The Pamex FTF is a Grade 3 residential keyed knob lockset.
10) Do I have to specify handing when I order a Pamex FTF Baron knobset?
No handing to call out. The FTF is non-handed, so one lockset works on a left or right hand door swinging either way. Nothing needs to be reversed in the field.
11) How does the entrance function on the Pamex FTF work day to day?
Entrance/office function: the outside knob is locked or unlocked by key, and the inside turn-piece does the same from within. That is the function you want on a unit entry or an office door where staff lock up behind themselves. If you need a door that locks for a bathroom or bedroom instead, that is privacy function, and if the door should never lock, passage.
12) I need to match the Pamex FTF entry knob with passage and privacy sets on the other doors in the same unit. What pairs with it?
The FTF is the keyed entrance/office knob. For the non-keyed doors in the same unit, the Cal-Royal BER20 is a Grade 3 privacy knob on the same 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch thickness range, and Cal-Royal's BER00 is a Grade 3 entrance knob with a Kwikset keyway if you want more keyed openings on one key section. Trim styling will not match Pamex exactly, so if a consistent look across every door matters, run one brand through the whole unit.
13) Does the Pamex FTF come with a deadlatch or a plain latch?
Both, in the right places. The exterior side gets a 2-3/8 inch deadlatch, which resists carding on a keyed entry, and the interior side gets a 2-3/8 inch plainlatch. The faceplate is 1 x 2-1/4 inches with round corners, matching most existing residential latch mortises. Other latch and faceplate options can be specified.
14) Is a dummy knob a substitute for an entrance knob lockset?
No. A dummy knob is a surface-mounted pull with no latch and no bolt at all, so it cannot secure or even hold a door closed. The BEST 6K Series single dummy trim, the Cal-Royal BA40 dummy knob, the Schlage A170 single dummy trim and the Bravura Biloxi dummy knobset are all dummy function. The Pamex FTF is a keyed entrance/office lock with a 1/2 inch throw bolt and a deadlatch. Dummy trim is for the inactive leaf of a pair or a false door where only a pull is required.
15) What other Grade 3 keyed entry knobs are available if the Baron style does not suit the building?
Grade 3 keyed knobs come in several trim styles. The Callan Canova and Callan Santo are Grade 3 entrance knobsets, as are the Delaney Belton, Delaney Galway and Delaney Olivia. The Master Lock BC Series is a Grade 3 keyed entry knob with a biscuit knob. The Kwikset 400P-CP is a Grade 3 keyed entry Polo knob covering 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the same door range as the Pamex FTF, and ships with a round corner adjustable latch and round corner strike.
16) Can I use a Sargent 28C knob trim in place of a cylindrical entrance knob lock?
No. The Sargent 28C-KNOB is exit device trim - a knob and rose that mounts to a 28 Series exit device on a 1-3/4 inch door, not a standalone lock. The same applies to the Imperial USA ED-BKL580 knob trim and the Sargent 78-2875 outside knob only. The Pamex FTF is a self-contained cylindrical knob lockset that mounts in a 2-1/8 inch cross bore with a 1 inch edge bore. Exit device trim needs the device on the door to function.
17) Which keyed knob option avoids issuing keys to tenants or crews?
The Lockey 3830 is a mechanical keyless combination knob lock with an auto-locking passage function, fitting doors 1 3/16 inch to 2 inch. Access is by combination rather than a cylinder, so there are no keys to cut or collect when a crew or tenant changes. The Pamex FTF is keyed, using a 5-pin KW keyway solid brass cylinder as standard with a 5-pin SC C keyway available.
18) I need to key the lockset and the deadbolt on the same door alike - what covers both?
A combo pack ships the knob and deadbolt together as a keyed-alike set. The Schlage Residential F500 Plymouth with Georgian knob is a combo covering 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors with adjustable backsets and dual strikes. The Pamex FTF is a knob lockset on its own, supplied with a 2-1/4 inch by 1-3/4 inch round corner full lip strike and a 2-3/8 inch backset as standard.
19) What knob lockset should I specify for a classroom door instead of an entrance function?
Classroom function differs from entrance/office in how the outside knob is secured: there is no inside turn-piece, so the outside knob is locked and unlocked by key only from the corridor. The Dexter C2000 classroom ball knob is a Grade 2 keyed classroom lock fitting 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the same door range as the Pamex FTF. The Pamex FTF is an entrance/office function set that a building occupant can leave unlocked from the inside turn-piece.
20) What is the Pamex Baron knob made of, and will it hold up in a rental unit?
Zinc die-cast construction, finished in oil rubbed bronze, matte black, or satin nickel. Zinc die-cast at Grade 3 is standard residential-duty hardware, fine for apartment and single family doors. On a door that gets hit hundreds of times a day, step up in grade rather than relying on this one.
21) Is a knob lockset or a lever the right call for an accessible unit?
The FTF Baron is a knob, and knobs require grasping and twisting. On openings where you need a handle operable without tight grasping, specify a lever set instead. For everything else, a Grade 3 knob is the common residential entry choice.
22) Is a solid brass decorative knobset an equivalent for a zinc die-cast entrance lockset?
They serve different openings. The Deltana 6901 Portland Knob is an entry function knob fitting 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Baldwin Estate 5000 Baltimore knob ships preconfigured with a 2-3/8 inch backset and full lip strike in passage and privacy versions. Solid brass decorative sets such as the Omnia 434/PA latchset are built around appearance and hand feel. The Pamex FTF is a zinc die-cast Grade 3 entrance/office set with a 2-3/8 inch backset and a 2-1/4 inch by 1-3/4 inch full lip strike, so it takes the same prep as the Baldwin 5000 sets.
