Pass & Seymour WPB36 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Pass & Seymour WPB weatherproof box rated for outdoor wet locations?
The WPB Series die-cast aluminum box is UL Listed and CSA Listed, and carries a UL wet and/or damp location rating when installed with an appropriate cover. The cover is the condition: bare box with open knockouts is not a wet-location assembly. It works for interior and exterior wiring alike.
2) What size conduit knockouts does the WPB36 box have, and where are they?
Five 3/4 inch knockouts: one in each end, one in each side, and one in the back. That gives you a straight-through run, a side feed, or a back feed into the wall without re-orienting the box. The knockout studs punch out with a sharp hammer blow, and two closure plugs come with the box for the openings you don't use.
3) Does the WPB weatherproof box come with a cover, or do I order that separately?
Covers are separate. The box ships with two closure plugs and mounting lugs only. It accepts standard 4-screw mounting covers and single-gang weatherproof covers, so order the cover that matches your device (GFCI flip lid, in-use cover, blank, or switch cover) along with the box, since the wet-location rating depends on having an appropriate cover in place.
4) I need a 3-gang weatherproof box - does the Pass & Seymour WPB go that wide?
No. The WPB Series tops out at 2-gang (WPB362, 30.5 cubic inches). For three devices in one weatherproof die-cast enclosure, the Mulberry 30601 Royal Mountie is a 3-gang powdered die-cast aluminum weatherproof outlet box. Cover and knockout arrangement differ between the two, so size your cover to whichever box you choose.
5) What weatherproof box should I use if I need three gangs instead of one or two?
The Pass & Seymour WPB Series covers 1-Gang at 16.8 cu. in. and 2-Gang at 30.5 cu. in. only. For a three-device opening, the Mulberry 30601 is a 3-gang weatherproof outlet box, also powdered die-cast aluminum, from Mulberry's Royal Mountie series. Same material class and outdoor intent, one more gang of device space.
6) Will a die-cast aluminum outlet box hold up on a coastal or corrosive exterior wall?
The WPB body is die-cast aluminum with a baked-on electrostatic polyester powder-coat in gray, which is what gives it its scratch and corrosion resistance outdoors. Aluminum itself won't rust. If the coating gets gouged during install, touch it up, because the powder-coat is doing the corrosion work on exposed runs.
7) Can the WPB box be surface mounted to a wall or post?
Yes, mounting lugs come with the box, so it's a surface-mount enclosure for a wall, column, or post. The back knockout lets you bring a feed straight out of the structure behind the box; leave it plugged with one of the supplied closure plugs if you're feeding from the side or end instead.
8) Can I run 1/2 inch conduit into the WPB36 box?
The openings are 3/4 inch trade size, so 1/2 inch conduit needs a 3/4 to 1/2 inch reducing washer or a reducing bushing at each entry. Running 3/4 inch EMT, rigid, or liquidtight connectors straight into the knockouts needs no adapter.
9) Is the Mulberry 30601 a direct replacement for a Pass & Seymour WPB36?
No. The WPB36 is the 1-Gang WPB box at 16.8 cu. in., while the Mulberry 30601 is a 3-gang box. Both are powder-coated die-cast aluminum weatherproof outlet boxes, so the construction is comparable, but the gang count and the cover it takes are different - a 3-gang box will not accept the single-gang weatherproof cover the WPB36 is built around.
10) I am standardizing outdoor boxes across a property - can I stay with die-cast aluminum across one, two, and three gang openings?
Yes. The Pass & Seymour WPB Series gives you die-cast aluminum in 1-Gang and 2-Gang, UL Listed and CSA Listed and rated for wet or damp locations with an appropriate cover. Where an opening needs three devices, the Mulberry 30601 is a powdered die-cast aluminum 3-gang weatherproof outlet box, so the material and finish type carry through the whole set even though the manufacturer changes.
11) What are the part numbers for the 1-gang and 2-gang Pass & Seymour weatherproof boxes?
WPB36 is the 1-gang at 16.8 cubic inches; WPB362 is the 2-gang at 30.5 cubic inches. Both are the same gray powder-coated die-cast aluminum box with the five 3/4 inch knockouts, made in India.
