1) Does the Paxton PaxLock Pro Latch come with the tubular latch, or do I need to buy that separately?
The latch is not included. The PaxLock Pro Latch handle set is sold on its own and you supply the tubular latch for the door. It is built to work with standard cylindrical door prep using a tubular latch, so budget the latch (and the strike, if you are not reusing the existing one) as a separate line on the order.
2) Will the PaxLock Pro work as a standalone lock, or does it need a Paxton10 system?
Both. The PaxLock Pro runs offline as a standalone device out of the box, or you can bring it onto a Paxton10 system through a Paxton10 wireless connector for real-time event reporting. Standalone capacity is 100 card packs, up to 5,000 tokens/users; online it goes to 50,000. If you start standalone on a small site and add Paxton10 later, the same hardware carries over.
3) What credentials does the PaxLock Pro reader accept?
It is a dual frequency reader and reads Paxton, EM4100/02, MiFare, MiFare Classic, MiFare DESFire EV1, MiFare Plus, MiFare Ultralight, MiFare Ultralight C, MiFare Mini, HID Prox, Sony and FeliCa Lite-S tokens. That HID Prox support matters if you are replacing readers on a building that already issued 125 kHz Prox cards, since you can leave existing credentials in circulation. Built-in Bluetooth also lets smart devices be used as credentials, and it is touch-to-enter hands free.
4) Is the PaxLock Pro Latch suitable for a fire rated door?
No. Fire Resistance on the PaxLock Pro Latch is listed as N/A, so do not specify it for a fire door opening. Use a fire rated mechanical lockset or a fire rated electrified lock on those doors. The PaxLock Pro does carry UL 294 for access control.
5) How much space does the PaxLock Pro take up on the door face?
The body measures 2-33/64 in. x 5 in. x 1-49/64 in. (W x H x D). With the handle included it is 6-3/8 in. wide, 5 in. high and projects 3-27/64 in. from the face. Check the 5 in. height against any vision frame, glass stop or narrow stile before committing, since the escutcheon has to sit flat.
6) What is the difference between the PaxLock Pro Latch version and a deadlatch version?
On the Latch version, when the door is unlocked the handle moves freely and retracts the tubular latch mechanically. It is the choice for standard cylindrical prep on interior and office doors where a simple latch is all the security the opening needs. It is not the choice for a fire door or for a door needing a deadbolt, and it is rated for typical traffic of up to 75 uses per day, so very high traffic entrances should get a hardwired electrified lock instead.
7) How often will I be changing batteries on a PaxLock Pro?
It runs on 4x AA 1.5V alkaline cells with a rated life of 55,000 operations. At the 75 uses per day the unit is specified for, that is a long service interval, and there is no wiring to the door, so no power transfer hinge or door loop is needed. Property managers standardizing across a building can plan one battery SKU for every opening.
8) How far can the PaxLock Pro be from the Paxton10 wireless connector?
Typical wireless range is Bluetooth 15 m / 50 ft, on 2.4 GHz (IEEE 802.15.4), default channel 25, with AES128 encryption. Operating temperature is +32 F to +120 F on both the reader side and the battery side, so it is not suited to an opening that drops below freezing. There is also no IK impact rating on this model. Keep it to interior doors and protected entrances; for an exposed exterior opening choose hardware rated for the temperature range and impact exposure at that door.
10) What finishes and lever style does the PaxLock Pro Galaxy come in?
Galaxy is the lever design, in a lever style handle, offered in black (BL) and white (WT). Those two are the full set, so if your building is standardized on a satin chrome or bronze aesthetic the Galaxy will not match, and you would be matching to the black or white finish instead.
