PDQ 102626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between a concave and convex wall stop, and which one is the PDQ 102?
The PDQ 102 is the concave bumper wall stop. Concave means the rubber face is dished inward, so it catches the rounded edge of a door knob or lever end and holds it centered. A convex bumper (domed face) is the one to use when the door strikes it flat, such as on the door face or against a flat trim plate. PDQ offers wall stops in convex, concave and adhesive backed bumper styles, so pick the face that matches what actually hits the wall.
2) My door swings into drywall with no stud behind it. Can I use a wall stop like the PDQ 102?
A wall stop only works if you can anchor into solid backing, a stud, blocking or masonry, behind the bumper. Hollow drywall will tear out under repeated door impact no matter which bumper you buy. If there is no backing where the door lands, go to a floor stop instead. PDQ's general hardware line includes low dome, high dome, riser and offset floor stops, plus 4 inch and 5 inch kick down stops and a 5 inch hinge stop as alternatives that do not load the wall.
3) I need the door to stay open, not just stop. Is the 102 the right part?
No. The 102 is a stop only, it absorbs the door and nothing more. For hold open you need a different part from the same PDQ general hardware line: a door holder with stop, a floor stop version with a keeper or hold open, or a kick down stop that the user sets by foot. Specify the holder up front, because the 102 cannot be converted.
4) What finishes does the PDQ 102 wall stop come in, and how do I order the right one?
Six finishes: 605 bright brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless steel. The finish code appends to the model, so bright brass is 102605 and satin stainless is 102630. To match existing door hardware on a building, order the stop in the same BHMA code already on your lever or hinge.
5) Will the PDQ 102 wall stop match the stops already installed in my building?
If the existing stops are concave bumper wall stops in one of six finishes, 605, 613E, 619, 625, 626 or 630, the 102 will blend in. What to check is the bumper face: a concave 102 next to a convex stop reads as a different part even in the same finish. Match the face shape first, then the finish code.
6) Can I use a PDQ 102 wall stop on a fire rated door opening?
A stop is a surface accessory and does not alter the door or frame assembly, so it is commonly used on rated openings as long as nothing is fastened through the door or frame rating. One cautionary note: never use a hold open device on a fire door unless it is a listed closer-holder release. Within the PDQ general hardware line, the privacy door latch is the item stated to be ADA compliant and to meet NFPA 80 Sections 5.2.4.2 and 5.2.13.3; that statement belongs to the latch, not to the 102 stop.
7) Does the PDQ 102 protect the lever or the lock face on the door?
No, a wall stop protects the wall and limits the swing. It does not shield the latch or lock. For that, PDQ's general hardware line carries latch protectors, including a 3-3/8 inch diameter notched version and a 12 inch interlock version, plus a door guard. Those are separate line items ordered alongside the stop.
