PDQ 9300F Key Removable Mullion, Fire Rated

9300 Series Removable Mullion for Double Doors

The PDQ 9300 Series is a removable mullion for pairs of doors fitted with PDQ 6300R and 6400R rim exit devices. Each door latches into the mullion, and the mullion can be removed from the top bracket with a rim cylinder key (9300) or a hex key (9301) to turn the pair into one wide, unobstructed opening for moving equipment, furniture or deliveries. When it goes back in, the mullion self-locks with no key required.

A powder coated 2" x 3" steel tube with a 3/16" wall is held by cast stainless steel head and foot brackets. Fire rated models (9300F and 9301F) are UL 10C listed for 3 hours on pairs up to and including 8' x 8' when used with PDQ 6300RF and 6400RF rim devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a mullion, and why use one instead of vertical rod exit devices?
A mullion is a post installed between a pair of doors so each leaf can carry its own independent rim exit device rather than needing surface or concealed vertical rods. The PDQ 9300 works with 6300R and 6400R rim devices, letting each door latch into the mullion.

Is the 9300 mullion fire rated?
The fire rated models are 3-hour fire labeled for door pairs up to 8' x 8' when used with fire rated 6300RF and 6400RF rim devices, and include the 639080 strike required for fire labeled installations.

When should a mullion be used instead of the 6300V or 6300C?
Choose the 9300 mullion with two rim devices when a visible center post is acceptable and a simpler latching setup is preferred. Choose surface (6300V / 6400V) or concealed (6300C / 6400C) vertical rod devices when the opening must stay mullion-free.

PDQ 9300F689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ 9300F mullion work with exit devices other than PDQ rim devices?
The 9300F is a removable mullion built for pairs of doors fitted with PDQ 6300R and 6400R rim exit devices, and its fire label is listed only with PDQ 6300RF and 6400RF fire rated rim devices. If your pair carries another manufacturer's devices, or vertical rod devices instead of rim devices, this is not the right mullion.
2) What size door pair can the fire rated 9300F mullion be used on?
Fire labeled 9300F mullions are UL 10C listed for 3 hours on pairs up to and including 8 feet by 8 feet, used with PDQ 6300RF or 6400RF rim devices. The fire rated mullion maxes out at 8 feet, so a 10 foot tube is not an option on a labeled opening. For shorter openings the 8 foot tube is field cut.
3) Do I need to order a strike separately for a fire labeled mullion?
No. Fire labeled 9300F mullions ship with the 639080 strike required for the labeled installation (two ML strikes included). Non-fire panic mullions are different: they come without a strike and you use the strike supplied with the exit device.
4) How is the PDQ 9300F mullion removed, and does it need a key to put back?
The 9300F releases from the top bracket with a rim cylinder key. Reinstalling needs no key at all, it self-locks when it drops back into the brackets. If you would rather not key it, the 9301 version of the series uses a hex key instead of a cylinder.
5) What do I have to specify when ordering a PDQ 9300F key removable mullion?
Four things beyond the finish: mullion size (8 feet and under opening for the fire rated version), cylinder, keyway, and keying. Cylinder choices run from a conventional cylinder or less cylinder through SFIC preps (SF6 6-pin, SF7 7-pin, SFL less core, SFC or SFP construction core) and Schlage LFIC preps (LF6, LFL, LFC). Keying is keyed different, keyed alike, or zero bitted.
6) Can the 9300F mullion be keyed into our existing master key system?
Yes, within a wide range of keyways. The cylinder can be ordered in Schlage C, C-K or E, PDQ Restricted TA, Arrow AR1, Corbin 59A1, 60 or L4, Russwin D1 or 981, Sargent LA or RA-RC, Accentra (Yale) E1R or GA, Falcon E-R, and Kwikset, plus SFIC in BEST A through TE sections and three PDQ exclusive SFIC keyways. Order keyed alike if you want both the mullion and other openings on one key, or zero bitted if your locksmith will key it on site.
7) Can wiring be run through the PDQ 9300F mullion for electrified exit devices?
Yes. An optional EM prep adds factory wire routing through the mullion with industry-standard Molex plug connectors, which is what you want when the pair carries electrified rim devices. It has to be specified as an option on the order, it is not standard.
8) Does the PDQ 9300F meet Buy American requirements for a government job?
PDQ lists the 9300 Series as meeting BAA requirements as a COTS product manufactured in the United States, which is the language a federal or state specifier is usually looking for on a mullion submittal.
9) Can the 8 foot mullion be cut down for a shorter door opening?
Yes, the tube is field cuttable to a shorter size, so one 8 foot mullion covers any opening at or under 8 feet. Keep in mind the fire rated version cannot exceed 8 feet, so taller labeled pairs need a different approach.
10) What finish does the PDQ 9300F come in, and can it be painted to match our frames?
Two choices, both paintable: 689 powder coated aluminum, or 600 primed for painting. The tube itself is powder coated steel, so either option takes a finish coat if you are matching existing frames.
11) How heavy duty is the PDQ 9300 mullion tube, and what are the brackets made of?
The tube is a 2 inch by 3 inch steel section with a 3/16 inch wall, powder coated, carried by cast stainless steel head and foot brackets. It is a commercial duty assembly.
