PDQ 9300 Key Removable Mullion

9300 Series Removable Mullion for Double Doors

The PDQ 9300 Series is a removable mullion for pairs of doors fitted with PDQ 6300R and 6400R rim exit devices. Each door latches into the mullion, and the mullion can be removed from the top bracket with a rim cylinder key (9300) or a hex key (9301) to turn the pair into one wide, unobstructed opening for moving equipment, furniture or deliveries. When it goes back in, the mullion self-locks with no key required.

A powder coated 2" x 3" steel tube with a 3/16" wall is held by cast stainless steel head and foot brackets. Fire rated models (9300F and 9301F) are UL 10C listed for 3 hours on pairs up to and including 8' x 8' when used with PDQ 6300RF and 6400RF rim devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a mullion, and why use one instead of vertical rod exit devices?
A mullion is a post installed between a pair of doors so each leaf can carry its own independent rim exit device rather than needing surface or concealed vertical rods. The PDQ 9300 works with 6300R and 6400R rim devices, letting each door latch into the mullion.

Is the 9300 mullion fire rated?
The fire rated models are 3-hour fire labeled for door pairs up to 8' x 8' when used with fire rated 6300RF and 6400RF rim devices, and include the 639080 strike required for fire labeled installations.

When should a mullion be used instead of the 6300V or 6300C?
Choose the 9300 mullion with two rim devices when a visible center post is acceptable and a simpler latching setup is preferred. Choose surface (6300V / 6400V) or concealed (6300C / 6400C) vertical rod devices when the opening must stay mullion-free.

PDQ 9300689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ 9300 removable mullion work with my existing rim exit devices?
The PDQ 9300 mullion is built for pairs of doors fitted with PDQ 6300R and 6400R rim exit devices, and each leaf latches into the mullion. For fire labeled openings it is listed only with PDQ 6300RF and 6400RF fire rated rim devices. If your pair carries something other than those PDQ rim devices, the mullion's listed compatibility doesn't cover it.
2) Is the PDQ 9300 mullion fire rated, and what size opening does the label cover?
Yes. The fire rated models, 9300F and 9301F, are UL 10C listed for 3 hours on pairs of doors up to and including 8' x 8', used with PDQ 6300RF or 6400RF fire rated rim devices. The fire mullion tops out at 8 feet, so the 10-foot version is a panic (non-labeled) application only.
3) What length mullion do I order for my double door opening, and can it be cut down?
Two sizes: 8' and under opening, and 10' and under opening. The steel tube is field cuttable to a shorter opening, so you buy the next size up and trim. One limit to watch: a fire labeled mullion is 8 feet maximum, so a 10-foot mullion is not a fire rated application.
4) Do I get a strike with the PDQ 9300 mullion, or do I need to order one separately?
It depends on which version you order. Fire labeled mullions ship with the 639080 strike (two ML strikes included) because that strike is required for the labeled install. Panic (non-fire) mullions do not include a strike. You use the strike supplied with the rim exit device instead, so nothing extra to buy there.
5) How is the PDQ 9300 mullion removed, and does it need a key to put back in?
The 9300 releases from the top bracket with a rim cylinder key; the 9301 variant uses a hex key instead. Either way, reinstalling is tool free, the mullion self-locks when it drops back into the brackets. That matters for staff who move furniture or take deliveries through a pair of doors and shouldn't have to carry a key to close the opening back up.
6) Can the PDQ 9300 mullion be keyed into the rest of my building's master key system?
Yes, if you take the key removable 9300 with a rim cylinder. Keyway choices cover Schlage C and E, Corbin 59A1, 60 and L4, Russwin D1 and 981, Sargent LA and RA-RC, Arrow AR1, Accentra (Yale) E1R and GA, Falcon E-R, Kwikset, PDQ restricted TA, and a long list of BEST SFIC sections. Keying is specified as keyed different, keyed alike, or zero bitted, and you can order small format IC prep (6-pin, 7-pin, less core, construction core) or Schlage LFIC prep, or less cylinder entirely if your locksmith supplies it.
7) How is the PDQ 9300 mullion built, and will it hold up in a high traffic commercial opening?
The post is a 2 inch by 3 inch powder coated steel tube with a 3/16 inch wall, carried by cast stainless steel head and foot brackets. It is a commercial product, not residential, and the stainless brackets are the part that takes the abuse on a mullion that gets pulled and reset regularly.
8) Can I run electrified exit device wiring through the PDQ 9300 mullion?
Yes, with the EM option. PDQ preps the mullion at the factory for wire routing and supplies industry standard Molex plug connectors, so an electrified rim device on the pair can be wired through the post rather than requiring a separate transfer. Specify EM at order time, it isn't a field addition.
9) Does the PDQ 9300 mullion meet Buy American requirements for a government job?
The 9300 Series mullion meets BAA requirements as a commercial off the shelf product manufactured in the United States, which is what federal and many state or municipal specs ask for on door hardware submittals.
10) What part number do I give my supplier for a PDQ 9300 mullion?
The number is built from the model and finish. An 8 foot mullion in aluminum is 9300689 and primed is 9300600; the 10 foot versions are 9310689 and 9310600. Add the F suffix designation for fire labeled (9300F) or the 9301 base for the hex key removable version, then specify cylinder, keyway and keying.
11) What finish does the PDQ 9300 mullion come in, and can it be painted to match the frame?
Two choices, and both take paint. The 689 aluminum finish is powder coated and can be painted over; the 600 option ships primed specifically for painting. Property managers matching a mullion to an existing dark bronze or custom frame color normally take the 600.
