PDQ 9301 Hex-Key Removable Mullion

9300 Series Removable Mullion for Double Doors

The PDQ 9300 Series is a removable mullion for pairs of doors fitted with PDQ 6300R and 6400R rim exit devices. Each door latches into the mullion, and the mullion can be removed from the top bracket with a rim cylinder key (9300) or a hex key (9301) to turn the pair into one wide, unobstructed opening for moving equipment, furniture or deliveries. When it goes back in, the mullion self-locks with no key required.

A powder coated 2" x 3" steel tube with a 3/16" wall is held by cast stainless steel head and foot brackets. Fire rated models (9300F and 9301F) are UL 10C listed for 3 hours on pairs up to and including 8' x 8' when used with PDQ 6300RF and 6400RF rim devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a mullion, and why use one instead of vertical rod exit devices?
A mullion is a post installed between a pair of doors so each leaf can carry its own independent rim exit device rather than needing surface or concealed vertical rods. The PDQ 9300 works with 6300R and 6400R rim devices, letting each door latch into the mullion.

Is the 9300 mullion fire rated?
The fire rated models are 3-hour fire labeled for door pairs up to 8' x 8' when used with fire rated 6300RF and 6400RF rim devices, and include the 639080 strike required for fire labeled installations.

When should a mullion be used instead of the 6300V or 6300C?
Choose the 9300 mullion with two rim devices when a visible center post is acceptable and a simpler latching setup is preferred. Choose surface (6300V / 6400V) or concealed (6300C / 6400C) vertical rod devices when the opening must stay mullion-free.

PDQ 9301600 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Which exit devices does the PDQ 9301 removable mullion work with?
The 9301 is built for pairs of doors fitted with PDQ 6300R and 6400R rim exit devices. Each leaf latches into the mullion, so both doors get their own independent rim device instead of vertical rods. For fire labeled openings, the fire rated mullion is listed only with PDQ 6300RF and 6400RF rim devices.
2) Is the PDQ 9301 mullion fire rated, and what size opening does the rating cover?
Fire rated versions exist as the 9300F and 9301F, UL 10C listed for 3 hours on pairs up to and including 8 ft by 8 ft, used with PDQ 6300RF or 6400RF rim devices. The fire rated mullion maxes out at 8 ft, so a 10 ft mullion is a panic application only. Fire labeled mullions ship with the 639080 strike (2 ML strikes) needed for that installation.
3) Does the PDQ 9301 mullion come with a strike, or do I need to order one?
Depends on the application. Fire labeled mullions include the 639080 strike (two ML strikes). On a panic (non fire rated) mullion no strike is supplied, and you use the strike that came with the 6300R or 6400R rim exit device. So on a standard panic pair, budget the devices, not a separate strike.
4) What is the difference between the PDQ 9300 and the 9301 mullion?
Both are the same 9300 Series removable mullion; the difference is how it comes out. The 9300 is released with a rim cylinder key, the 9301 with a hex key. Either way it self-locks when you set it back in the top bracket, with no key needed to secure it. If you do not want to dedicate a keyed cylinder to the mullion, the 9301 hex key version is the one to order.
5) How heavy duty is the PDQ 9301 mullion tube, and what are the brackets made of?
The tube is a 2 in by 3 in steel section with a 3/16 in wall, powder coated. Head and foot brackets are cast stainless steel. That is a solid post for high traffic commercial pairs where the mullion gets pulled and reset regularly.
6) Can I run power through a PDQ 9301 mullion for electrified exit devices?
Yes. The EM option is a factory wire routing prep with plugs using industry standard Molex connectors, so the mullion can carry wiring for electrified hardware on the pair. It has to be specified when the mullion is ordered, since the routing is done at the factory.
7) Does the PDQ 9301 mullion meet Buy American requirements for a government job?
PDQ states the 9300 Series mullion meets BAA requirements as a COTS product manufactured in the United States, which is what a federal or state procurement office is normally looking for on a door hardware submittal.
8) What do I have to specify when ordering a PDQ 9301 mullion?
Three decisions: finish (689 aluminum or 600 primed), mullion size (8 ft and under opening, or 10 ft and under opening), and any options such as EM wire routing or a fire label. Each combination has its own PDQ number, for example 9301689 for an 8 ft aluminum mullion or 9311600 for a 10 ft primed one.
9) What finishes does the PDQ 9301 removable mullion come in, and can it be painted to match the frame?
Two choices: 689 powder coated aluminum, which can be painted over, and 600 primed for painting if you intend to finish it on site to match the frames. The 689 aluminum is the one to pick if you want it to read as a neutral post with no further work.
