PDQ GT148 Grade 1 Classroom Cylindrical Lever Lock

Grade 1 Heavy Duty Commercial Cylindrical Lock

The PDQ GT148 is the Classroom function (ANSI/BHMA F84) of the PDQ GT Series Grade 1 Heavy Duty Cylindrical Lock.

The PDQ GT Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lock certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2. PDQ positions it as its general purpose Grade 1 lock for everyday commercial exterior and interior openings, with lever torque resistance of 2,200 lbf-in, three times the BHMA/ANSI standard, and cycle testing to over 3 times BHMA standards.

A heavy duty diecast chassis, machined billet steel spindles and a 13 gauge steel anti-rotation plate on the secure side give the lock its strength. A 2:1 latchbolt throw allows a 41 degree lever rotation, which reduces torque and extends the life of the lock. The GT is non-handed, assembled in Lancaster, PA, and offered in Philadelphia, Boston and Miami lever styles.

PDQ GT148BSN626D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ GT148 classroom lock fit a 2-inch thick door, or is it only for 1-3/4 inch?
The GT148 covers doors from 1-3/4 inches to 2-1/4 inches thick, so a 2-inch door is within range. It ships preset for 1-3/4 inches, which is the standard commercial thickness, so a thicker door means adjusting the chassis at install. It mounts through a standard ANSI A156.115 (161) cylindrical prep and thru-bolts through the door.
2) Does the PDQ GT148 need to be ordered left or right hand?
No handing to specify. The GT148 is non-handed, so one lock serves either swing and a property manager can stock a single part number for a whole building.
3) What does the classroom function on the PDQ GT148 actually do?
Classroom function, ANSI/BHMA F84: the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key from the outside only, and the inside lever always retracts the latch for free egress. There is no inside button or thumbturn, so a student cannot lock the door from inside the room. It is a single-cylinder keyed lock.
4) My doors are bored on a 2-3/8 inch backset. Can I still use the PDQ GT148?
Yes, order the 238 option. The GT148 is standard at 2-3/4 inches, which is the usual commercial backset, with 2-3/8 inches available as an ordering option. The 2-3/4 version uses a 2-1/4 x 1-1/8 inch faceplate and the 2-3/8 version a 2-1/4 x 1 inch faceplate, and the latch throw changes from 9/16 inch to 1/2 inch.
5) Can I key the PDQ GT148 into my existing Schlage or Best master key system?
Yes, on either platform. Conventional cylinders ship SCC keyway as standard, which is Schlage C compatible, and the keyway list also covers Schlage E, Arrow AR1, Corbin 59A1/60/L4, Russwin D1, Sargent LA and RA-RC, Accentra (Yale) E1R and GA, Falcon E-R, 5-pin Kwikset, and PDQ's restricted TA. For interchangeable core systems, order SFIC prep for 6 or 7-pin small format cores compatible with Best, Falcon and Arrow, or Schlage LFIC prep. Keying options run KD, 0-bitted, KA2, KA4, KA, master keyed, master keyed to existing bittings, and construction master keyed.
6) Is the PDQ GT148 approved for a 3-hour fire rated classroom door?
Yes. The GT148 is UL 10C listed for 3-hour fire doors on single doors up to 4 feet by 8 feet, and it is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Grade 1. It also complies with ADA and ICC/ANSI 117.1 for lever operation.
7) Which Schlage or Sargent lock does the PDQ GT148 replace?
PDQ cross references the GT148 classroom lock against the Schlage ND70, Sargent 10G37, Best 9KxxR, Corbin CL3355, Falcon T561, Hager 3470, Dorma C170, Marks S, and Accentra 5408LN. Because it uses the standard 161 cylindrical door prep, it drops into an opening already bored for any of those, and you can order it in the matching keyway so it joins the existing key system.
8) Is the PDQ GT148 compliant with California Education Code lockdown requirements?
Not the GT148. PDQ lists California Education Code compliance for the GT135, GT135LED and GT145 functions, which allow locking from inside the classroom. The GT148 is the F84 classroom function, keyed from the corridor side only, so lockdown requires a key in the hallway.
9) Is the GT148 tough enough for a high school corridor, or should I spec the XGT?
The GT handles standard to heavy commercial traffic and is the right pick for most school, office and retail openings, interior or exterior. It is rated at 2,200 lbf-in of lever torque resistance, three times the BHMA/ANSI minimum, with a diecast chassis, billet steel spindles and a 13 gauge anti-rotation plate on the secure side. Step up to the XGT at 3,000 lbf-in only where the opening faces extreme abuse or vandalism.
10) Can the PDQ GT148 go on an exterior door in a Florida hurricane zone?
Yes. The GT148 is approved for Florida HVHZ installation under PDQ Product Approval FL 21376, with a design load of plus or minus 70.0 PSF on a 3 by 7 foot single door. For coastal exposure, the weatherized finish option is available, but only on 626 Satin Chrome.
11) What lever styles and finishes does the PDQ GT148 come in?
Three solid diecast lever designs, Philadelphia, Boston and Miami, in seven finishes: 605 Bright Brass, 606 Satin Brass, 613E Dark Oxidized Satin Bronze, 619 Satin Nickel, 622 Flat Black, 625 Bright Chrome and 626 Satin Chrome. If you are matching existing openings with different hardware inside and out, the SF split finish option lets you specify the outside trim finish first, then the inside. One ordering note for locksmiths: large format IC is offered on the Philadelphia lever only, so a Schlage LFIC job locks you into that lever.
12) What options do I need to decide on when ordering a PDQ GT148?
Beyond lever style and finish, the order form asks for backset (2-3/4 or 2-3/8), strike (ASA, full lip or T), cylinder or core prep, keyway and keying. Then the extras: tactile abrasive coating inside, outside or both sides for hazardous-room identification, lead-lined rose for X-ray rooms, dust box for the strike pocket, antimicrobial coating on the lever and rose (626 only), request to exit switch, and the industry standard Molex connector. Each combination has its own PDQ part number, for example GT148PHL605D.
13) Does the PDQ GT148 work on a pair of doors?
Yes, but the latch changes the feel. With the standard 2-3/4 inch backset latch the lever rotates 41 degrees, which is the 2:1 throw arrangement that lowers torque on the chassis. Specified with the 2-3/4 inch latch for double doors, lever rotation goes to 65 degrees.
14) Does the PDQ GT148 classroom lock come with keys?
Two keys ship per lock on keyed configurations. If you prefer to key them yourself, order the OB option, 0-bitted with two blank keys, or order SFIC prep less core and supply your own cores.
