PDQ XGT148 Grade 1 Classroom Cylindrical Lever Lock

Grade 1 Extra Heavy Duty Cylindrical Lock

The PDQ XGT148 is the Classroom function (ANSI/BHMA F84) of the PDQ XGT Series Grade 1 Extra Heavy Duty Cylindrical Lock.

The PDQ XGT Series is an extra heavy duty cylindrical lock certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Grade 1 and cycle tested to over 3 times the BHMA standard. A 2:1 latch bolt throw allows a 41 degree lever rotation with the 2-3/4" backset, which reduces torque and lengthens the life of the lock.

XGT is the step up from the GT Series for doors that face heavy abuse, with 3,000 lbf-in of lever torque resistance and a 13-gauge steel anti-rotation plate. It is assembled in Lancaster, PA.

Key Features

  • Heavy duty diecast chassis with investment cast, cold rolled steel and stainless steel mechanism
  • 13-gauge steel anti-rotation plate for added stability
  • 3,000 lbf-in lever torque resistance, about 4 times the ANSI/BHMA standard
  • Solid diecast Philadelphia, Boston or Miami levers on 3-3/8" wrought brass roses with concealed screws
  • Non-handed; fits doors 1-3/4" to 2-1/4" thick with through-bolted mounting and a standard ANSI A156.115 (161) prep
  • Keyed functions take a Schlage C compatible conventional cylinder, small format IC cores compatible with Best, Falcon and Arrow, or Schlage large format IC cores (Philadelphia lever only)
  • UL 10C listed for 3-hour fire doors, single doors up to 4' x 8', and approved for the Florida High Velocity Hurricane Zone
  • Complies with ADA and ICC/ANSI 117.1; Limited Lifetime Warranty on the mechanical lock

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the PDQ XGT and GT cylindrical locks?
Both are ANSI/BHMA Grade 1. XGT is rated for 3,000 lbf-in of lever torque resistance, about 4 times the ANSI/BHMA standard, versus 2,200 lbf-in for GT. XGT also uses a 13-gauge steel anti-rotation plate and is cycle tested to over 3 times BHMA standards.

Is the XGT lock fire rated?
Yes. XGT is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors on single doors up to 4'0" x 8'0", meeting UL 10C requirements.

What door thicknesses and backsets fit the XGT lock?
XGT fits doors 1-3/4" to 2-1/4" thick (preset for 1-3/4") with a 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" backset, and it is non-handed, so one unit installs on any door hand.

PDQ XGT148BSN626L – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the classroom function do on the PDQ XGT148 lever lock?
The XGT148 is the classroom function, ANSI/BHMA F84. One cylinder on the outside: the key locks and unlocks the outside lever, and the inside lever always retracts the latch for free egress. There is no inside button or thumbturn, so a teacher cannot lock the door from within the room. If you need the room-side locking that California Education Code requires, PDQ covers that with other XGT functions (XGT135, XGT135LED and XGT145), not the 148.
2) Will a PDQ XGT148 fit a 2-inch thick door, or only 1-3/4 inch?
Doors from 1-3/4 inch up to 2-1/4 inch thick take the XGT148. It ships preset for 1-3/4 inch, so a 2 inch door needs the lock adjusted at install. Mounting is through-bolted, and it drops into a standard ANSI A156.115 (161) cylindrical prep.
3) Do I need to order the PDQ XGT148 left hand or right hand?
Handing is not a concern. The XGT148 is non-handed, so one lock installs on a left or right hand door, inswing or outswing. Nothing on the order needs a hand designation.
4) Will the XGT148 latch into my existing strike with a 2-3/8 inch backset prep?
Both backsets are available. Order 238 for a 2-3/8 inch backset, which gives a 1/2 inch latchbolt throw and a 2-1/4 x 1 inch faceplate; the standard 234 gives 2-3/4 inch backset, a 9/16 inch throw and a 2-1/4 x 1-1/8 inch faceplate. Both latches are deadlocking. Strike choices are the ASA standard 1-1/4 x 4-7/8, a full lip strike 1-5/8 x 2-1/4, or a T-strike 1-1/8 x 2-3/4, so you can match the frame prep you already have instead of re-prepping it.
5) Can I key the PDQ XGT148 into my existing Schlage or Best master key system?
Yes, several ways. Keyed functions take a Schlage C compatible conventional cylinder (SCC is standard), a small format interchangeable core compatible with Best, Falcon and Arrow, or a Schlage large format IC core, which is available with the Philadelphia lever only. Keyways offered include Schlage C, C-K and E, Arrow AR1, Corbin 59A1, 60 and L4, Russwin D1, Sargent LA and RA-RC, Accentra (Yale) E1R and GA, Falcon E-R, Kwikset in 5-pin, and PDQ restricted TA. Keying options run KD, 0-bitted, KA2, KA4, KA, master keyed, master keyed to existing bittings, and construction master keyed. Each lock ships with two keys.
6) Is the PDQ XGT148 approved for a 3-hour fire rated classroom door?
Fire rated, UL 10C listed for 3 hours on single doors up to 4 feet by 8 feet. It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Grade 1 and complies with ADA and ICC/ANSI 117.1 for the lever operation. For hurricane work it carries PDQ Florida Product Approval FL 21376 for the High Velocity Hurricane Zone, with a design load of plus or minus 70.0 PSF on a 3 by 7 foot single door.
7) Should I spec the PDQ XGT or the GT cylindrical lock for a high-abuse entry?
Both are Grade 1, so the difference is abuse resistance. XGT resists 3,000 lbf-in of lever torque, roughly four times the ANSI/BHMA requirement, against 2,200 lbf-in for GT, and it adds a 13-gauge steel anti-rotation plate plus cycle testing to over three times BHMA standards. For stairwells, high-traffic exterior entries, and doors that get kicked or hung on, XGT is the one to spec. For normal interior traffic, GT does the job.
8) What lever styles and finishes can I get on the PDQ XGT148, and can I match existing doors?
Three solid diecast lever designs, Philadelphia, Boston and Miami, on 3-3/8 inch wrought brass roses with concealed screws. Seven finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 flat black, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. A split finish option (SF) lets you run one finish outside and another inside, designating outside trim first. Note that Boston and Miami levers are small format core only; large format Schlage IC cores require the Philadelphia lever.
9) What extra options should I consider when ordering PDQ XGT148 locks for a hospital or x-ray room?
Two matter for healthcare. LL adds a lead-lined rose for imaging rooms, and AM adds an antimicrobial coating to inside and outside levers and roses, available in 626 satin chrome only. A dust box (DB) is also available for the strike pocket. Other order-time add-ons include tactile abrasive coating for hazardous-room identification, inside only, outside only or both sides, a weatherized finish in 626 only, a Molex connector (ISMC) and request to exit (REX) switching.
10) Can I buy the PDQ XGT148 without cylinders so my locksmith can core it later?
Yes. Order it Less Cylinder, or as an SFIC prep less core, or a Schlage LFIC prep less core. If you want the job locked during construction, there are construction core options too: SFIC prep with construction core, SFIC prep with plastic construction core, and Schlage LFIC prep with construction core, plus CMK construction master keying and OB (0-bitted with two blank keys). Fully cored versions are available as SFIC prep with a 6-pin or 7-pin core, Schlage LFIC prep with a Schlage core, or a conventional cylinder.
11) Why does the PDQ XGT148 lever only rotate 41 degrees, and does that matter on a pair of doors?
The 2:1 latch bolt throw at the 2-3/4 inch backset lets the lever retract the latch in 41 degrees of rotation, which cuts the torque a user puts through the mechanism and extends lock life. For double doors PDQ offers the 2-3/4 inch latch arrangement with 65 degree rotation instead. If you are hanging a pair, call that out on the order.
12) Is the PDQ XGT148 an electrified lock?
No, the XGT148 is a mechanical classroom lock. It is not an electrified or electronic lockset. Request to exit (REX) switching and an industry standard Molex connector (ISMC) can be added for monitoring and wiring tie-in, but the locking itself stays key operated.
13) What is the latch faceplate size and bevel on the PDQ XGT148?
The front measures 2-1/4 x 1-1/8 inches on the 2-3/4 inch backset latch, or 2-1/4 x 1 inch on the 2-3/8 inch backset, in stainless steel or wrought brass, beveled 1/8 inch in 2 inches. That bevel suits a standard beveled door edge, and the 2-1/4 x 1-1/8 front matches the common commercial latch mortise so most replacements do not need the door edge re-routed.
