Frequently Asked Questions

Does the KM deadbolt accept small format interchangeable cores?
Yes. With a conventional cylinder it fits doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick, and with SFIC it fits doors 1-1/2 to 2 inches thick. SFIC cores are 6 or 7-pin and compatible with Best, Falcon and Arrow systems.

What is the difference between single cylinder, double cylinder and classroom functions?
Single cylinder uses a key outside and a thumbturn inside. Double cylinder requires a key on both sides, often used near glazed doors. Classroom function is keyed for controlled access in institutional settings.

Is the KM deadbolt fire rated?
It is UL 10C listed for 3-hour fire doors as an auxiliary lock on A label single doors up to 4 x 8 feet, and UL 10B listed for neutral pressure doors.

PDQ KM148630D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ KM148 deadbolt fit a 1-3/4 inch commercial door?
Yes, with a conventional cylinder the KM148 covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. If you order it with an SFIC prep instead, the range shifts to 1-1/2 to 2 inches, so a 1-3/4 inch door works either way. Door prep is a 2-1/8 inch diameter cross bore, which is the standard commercial bore, and the backset ships adjustable 2-3/8 to 2-3/4 inches so it drops into either common prep.
2) What does classroom function mean on a deadbolt, and how is it different from a single or double cylinder deadbolt?
The KM148 is the classroom function of the PDQ KM Series, ANSI/BHMA E1171. A single cylinder deadbolt is key outside, thumbturn inside. A double cylinder needs a key on both sides, which is what people spec near glazing so a broken light does not give access to a turn. Classroom function is keyed for controlled access in institutional use, where staff holds the key and occupants cannot throw or retract the bolt freely.
3) Can the KM148 deadbolt be keyed into our existing Schlage master key system?
Yes. SCC (Schlage C compatible) is the standard keyway, and the KM148 can be keyed into an existing master key system, including master keyed to existing bittings. Keying options run KD keyed different, 0-bitted with two blank keys, keyed alike in 2, 3-4 or 5-plus groups, master keyed, and construction master keyed. Other keyways are available too, including Schlage E, Corbin 59A1, L4 and 60, Russwin D1, Sargent LA and RA-RC, Accentra (Yale) E1R and GA, Falcon E-R, Arrow AR1, and PDQ's restricted TA.
4) Does the KM148 take a small format interchangeable core, and which systems does it match?
Yes. The KM accepts 6 or 7-pin SFIC cores compatible with Best, Falcon and Arrow, and it will also take a large format IC core or a conventional cylinder. On the order you pick the cylinder treatment: conventional cylinder, less cylinder, SFIC prep with a 6-pin core, SFIC prep with a 7-pin core, SFIC prep with a construction core or plastic construction core, SFIC prep less core, or Schlage LFIC prep less core. If your locksmith already stocks cores, the less-core preps are the ones to order.
5) Will the KM148 deadbolt latch into the strike we already have in the frame?
The KM148 throws a 1 inch bolt, so it needs a full 1 inch of pocket depth behind the strike. The supplied strike is 2-3/4 x 1-1/8 inches and comes with a dust box. If your existing frame strike is a different size or has a shallow pocket, use the strike and dust box in the box rather than reusing the old one, because the 1 inch throw is what gives the bolt its security value.
6) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand KM148?
No handing to specify. The KM148 is non-handed, so one part number covers both swings, and the thumbturn is ADA compliant. For a property manager stocking spares across a building, that means a single configuration covers every door of that prep.
7) Which faceplate and backset option should I choose for the PDQ KM148?
Backset is a required choice and it carries the faceplate with it. Adjustable 2-3/4 to 2-3/8 inch comes with a 2-1/4 x 1 inch faceplate plus a square corner filler for a 1-1/8 inch wide prep, or as ADJR with a 2-1/4 x 1 x 1/4 inch radius faceplate. Fixed versions are 234 and 234R at 2-3/4 inch, and 238 and 238R at 2-3/8 inch, with the R suffix again meaning the radius corner plate. Match the corner style to the existing mortise in the door edge: radius for a routed edge, square with filler for a chiselled square prep.
8) Is the KM148 deadbolt tough enough for a school or retail exterior entry?
That is what the KM Series is built for: heavy duty commercial use in high-traffic openings such as schools, retail entries and office exteriors. The bolt is brass with a 1/4 inch case-hardened steel roll pin through it, which is the anti-saw feature, and it throws 1 inch. It is a mechanical lock, not electronic, so there is nothing to power or fail.
9) Does the KM148 meet ADA and accessibility code for a public building?
Yes. The thumbturn is ADA compliant and the deadbolt is compliant with ADA and ICC/ANSI A117.1. It is also TAA compliant, which matters on government and federally funded procurement. ANSI/BHMA function is E1171.
10) How many keys come with the PDQ KM148, and what if I order it less cylinder?
With a conventional cylinder you get two keys per lock, and the cylinder is a 6-pin brass rim insert keyed to 5 pins, with high security cylinders available. Order it less cylinder or SFIC prep less core and no keys or cylinder ship with it, so you need to supply the core yourself. The 0-bitted option (OB) comes with two blank keys for a locksmith to pin on site.
11) What finishes does the PDQ KM148 classroom deadbolt come in?
Six: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 flat black, 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless steel. The front, strike and scalp are stainless steel or wrought brass depending on finish, with a reinforced diecast rose, so matching 630 to existing satin stainless levers and hinges is straightforward.
