Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the KT Series extra heavy duty?
The KT bolt contains two concealed 1/4" case-hardened steel roll pins for added resistance to sawing and drilling attacks beyond PDQ's other deadbolt duty tiers. It pairs this with a wrought brass scalp and reinforced zinc diecast rose.

When should a KT deadbolt be specified instead of a KM or KV?
The KT is intended for extra heavy duty, high-abuse exterior doors, high-vandalism areas and facilities needing maximum forced-entry resistance. The KM is built for standard heavy duty commercial exterior doors and the KV for lighter-duty interior or light commercial use.

What door thickness and backset does the KT fit?
The KT is built for standard 1-3/4" doors with a 2-1/8" diameter door prep and supports a 2-3/4" (default) or 2-3/8" backset. Other door thicknesses are available by contacting the factory.

PDQ KT148626L – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Classroom function on the PDQ KT148 deadbolt actually do?
The KT148 is the Classroom function (ANSI/BHMA E1171) version of PDQ's KT Series auxiliary deadbolt. It is a single-cylinder deadbolt, so the key operates the bolt from the outside only and there is no thumbturn on the inside face. That is the point of the function in a school or similar setting: the bolt can only be thrown or retracted by someone with a key, not by anyone standing inside the room. If you need inside thumbturn operation, this is the wrong function.
2) Will the PDQ KT148 fit a 1-3/4 inch door with an existing 2-1/8 inch bore?
Yes. The KT148 is built for standard 1-3/4 inch doors and uses a 2-1/8 inch diameter door prep, which is the common deadbolt cross-bore, so it drops into an existing prep of that size. Backset is 2-3/4 inches by default with 2-3/8 inches available, so both of the usual commercial backsets are covered. For door thicknesses other than 1-3/4 inches, PDQ handles those as a factory inquiry.
3) Can the PDQ KT148 be used on a 3-hour fire rated door?
The KT148 carries a UL 10C listing and is 3-hour fire rated as an auxiliary lock on A label single doors up to 4 feet by 8 feet. It is also UL 10B listed for neutral pressure doors. Note the wording: it is rated as an auxiliary lock, meaning it is used alongside the primary latching device on the opening, not as the only latch on a fire door.
4) Will the KT148 key into my existing Schlage C master key system?
Yes. The KT148 ships with an SCC (Schlage C compatible) keyway as standard and uses a 6-pin brass mortise cylinder keyed to 5 pins, so it can be keyed into an existing master key system, including master keyed (MK), construction master keyed (CMK) or keyed to existing bittings (KE). Two keys come with each lock. Other keyways are available at order, including Arrow AR1, Corbin 59A1, 60 and L4, Russwin D1, Schlage E and C-K, Sargent LA and RA-RC, Accentra (Yale) E1R and GA, Falcon E-R, and PDQ's restricted TA.
5) Will the KT148 bolt reach my existing strike, and what strike comes with it?
The bolt throws a full 1 inch of solid brass, so it engages deep into the frame. A 2-3/4 by 1-1/8 inch strike is supplied along with a dust box, in stainless steel or wrought brass. If you are replacing an older auxiliary deadbolt, compare that strike footprint against the frame cutout you already have; the 1 inch throw means the bolt needs a pocket of matching depth behind the strike.
6) Do I need to worry about handing when ordering the KT148 deadbolt?
No. The KT148 is non-handed, so one part works on a left or right hand door and you do not need to specify swing. What you do have to specify on the order is finish, cylinder (conventional or less cylinder), backset and faceplate style, keyway, and keying.
7) Should I specify a PDQ KT deadbolt or step down to the KM or KV?
Pick the KT when the opening takes abuse: high-vandalism areas, exterior doors that get attacked, detention-adjacent spaces, anywhere forced-entry resistance is the driving requirement. The KT bolt carries two concealed 1/4 inch case-hardened steel roll pins to resist sawing and drilling. PDQ's KM is the standard heavy duty choice for commercial exterior doors, and the KV is the lighter-duty option for interior or light commercial work.
8) What faceplate options are there on the KT148, and why does it matter?
Faceplate comes bundled with the backset choice. At 2-3/4 inch backset you can order a 2-1/4 by 1 inch square faceplate (with a square corner filler for 1-1/8 inch width), the same in a 1/4 inch radius corner version, or a drive-in bolt with no faceplate at all. The 2-3/8 inch backset offers the same three. Match the corner style to the existing edge prep on the door, square for square-routed edges and radius for the rounded prep most factory-machined doors have, or use the drive-in for a bored edge with no mortise.
9) Can I order the KT148 without a cylinder so my locksmith can use our own?
Yes. Every finish on the KT148 is available either with a conventional cylinder or less cylinder, so a locksmith or integrator standardizing a building on its own mortise cylinders can supply them. Less cylinder parts carry an L at the end of the PDQ number, for example KT148605L in 605 Bright Brass, while the cylinder-included version is KT148605D.
10) How do I order KT148 deadbolts keyed alike across a set of classroom doors?
Keying is a required selection. For a group of doors on one key, choose KA2 for two or fewer, KA4 for three to four, or KA for five or more. Other choices are KD keyed random, OB zero-bitted with two blank keys for a locksmith to pin on site, MK master keyed, KE master keyed to existing bittings, and CMK construction master keyed. Each lock ships with two keys.
11) What finishes does the PDQ KT148 come in for matching other hardware in a building?
Five finishes: 605 Bright Brass, 606 Satin Brass, 613E Dark Oxidized Satin Bronze, 625 Bright Chrome and 626 Satin Chrome. All five are offered both with a conventional cylinder and less cylinder. If the outside and inside of the door need different finishes, PDQ handles split finish through Customer Service, with the outside trim designated first.
12) Is an ADA compliant thumbturn available for the PDQ KT Series deadbolt?
An ADA thumbturn is offered on the KT Series as a special order. The KT148 itself is the Classroom, single-cylinder function with key operation outside only, so if the inside of the door needs thumbturn operation you are specifying a different function in the series rather than adding it to the 148.
