Frequently Asked Questions

How does the KV deadbolt differ from the KM and KT Series?
KV is PDQ's standard duty deadbolt for interior and light commercial doors. KM is built for heavier duty commercial exteriors, and KT adds a double roll pin bolt for extra heavy duty, high abuse applications. All three share UL 10C/10B fire listings and ADA compliance.

What door thickness does the KV deadbolt fit?
With a conventional cylinder it fits doors 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" thick. With a small format interchangeable core it fits 1-1/2" to 2" thick doors.

Does the KV deadbolt support high security cylinders?
Yes. Standard high security cylinders are available in addition to the standard 6-pin brass cylinder keyed to 5 pins.

PDQ KV125IND626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the PDQ KV125IND single sided indicator deadbolt look like on each side of the door?
The KV125IND is a thumb turn only deadbolt with an occupancy indicator, so it is non-keyed. You throw the bolt from the inside and the indicator shows occupied or vacant from the other face. There is no key cylinder on it, which is why it suits restrooms, single-occupant toilets, lactation and changing rooms rather than an entry door you need to lock behind you with a key. If you need key operation, order a keyed function of the KV Series instead (single cylinder or double cylinder).
2) Will a PDQ KV deadbolt fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
Yes. With a conventional cylinder the KV Series covers 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, which takes in both the standard commercial 1-3/4 inch leaf and older 1-3/8 inch interior doors. If you are specifying small format interchangeable core, the range shifts up to 1-1/2 inch through 2 inch. Door prep is a 2-1/8 inch diameter cross bore.
3) Can the PDQ KV125IND go into an existing deadbolt prep with a 2-3/8 inch backset?
Yes. The backset is adjustable from 2-3/4 inch down to 2-3/8 inch, the two backsets you find on existing doors, and the bore is the common 2-1/8 inch diameter. The faceplate is 2-1/4 x 1 inch and ships with a filler plate, so it covers a wider existing mortise. Order the ADJR option if the existing edge prep has a 1/4 inch radius faceplate cutout rather than a square one.
4) Is the PDQ KV125IND fire rated for a 3 hour door?
Fire rated, yes. The KV Series is UL 10C listed and 3-hour rated as an auxiliary lock on A label single doors, tested to ANSI positive pressure up to and including 3 hours, and UL 10B listed for neutral pressure doors. Note the wording: it is listed as an auxiliary lock, so it is used alongside the primary latching device on the opening, not as the only hardware holding the leaf.
5) Should I use the PDQ KV, KM or KT deadbolt for an exterior commercial door?
Use KM or KT, not KV. KV is PDQ's standard duty bolt aimed at interior doors, offices and light commercial entries. KM is built for heavier duty commercial exteriors, and KT uses a double roll pin bolt for extra heavy duty, high abuse openings. All three carry the UL 10C and 10B fire listings and ADA compliance, so stepping up does not cost you the rating.
6) Will the PDQ KV deadbolt latch into the strike already in my frame?
The bolt throws a full 1 inch, so it reaches through a standard frame strike pocket. The lock comes with its own 2-3/4 x 1 inch strike and a dust box, and that is the strike the 1 inch throw is designed around. If your existing frame strike is a different size you can reuse the frame cutout only if it matches 2-3/4 x 1; otherwise install the supplied strike.
7) Does the PDQ indicator deadbolt meet ADA for a restroom door?
The KV Series complies with ADA and ICC/ANSI A117.1. The indicator function is thumb turn operated, which is the operable part ADA cares about on a single-occupant restroom. It is a commercial duty lock, not residential.
8) Do I need to worry about handing when ordering the PDQ KV125IND?
No. The KV deadbolt is non-handed, so one part number works on a left or right hand door swinging either way. That makes it simple to stock for a building where you are replacing bolts across mixed openings.
9) What finishes does the PDQ KV125IND indicator deadbolt come in, and will it match my other door hardware?
Three finishes: 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless steel. 630 is the usual match for stainless lever sets and push/pull hardware, 626 for satin chrome trim. The exposed front, strike and scalp are stainless steel or wrought brass depending on finish, so the metal matches rather than being plated pot metal.
10) What do I have to specify when ordering a PDQ KV125IND and how is the part number built?
Finish and backset faceplate style are the two real decisions on the indicator function: pick 613E, 626 or 630, then the adjustable 2-3/4 to 2-3/8 backset with the square 2-1/4 x 1 faceplate or ADJR with the 1/4 inch radius faceplate. The finish code is appended to the model, for example KV125IND613E. Strike and dust box are included, so nothing further is needed to hang it on a prepped door.
11) Why does the PDQ KV125IND still ask for a keyway if it is non-keyed?
The KV125IND is the thumb turn indicator function and has no cylinder of its own, but the KV ordering form shares keying selections across the series so you can keep a restroom bolt on the same order and the same system records as the keyed KV bolts on the job. On the keyed functions those choices run from SCC Schlage C standard through Arrow AR1, Corbin, Russwin D1, Sargent LA and RA-RC, Accentra (Yale) E1R and GA, Falcon E-R, PDQ TA, and the Best SFIC families A through WH plus PDQ exclusive sections.
12) How well does the PDQ KV bolt resist being sawn?
The bolt is brass with one 1/4 inch case-hardened steel roll pin cast into it, which is what defeats a hacksaw blade on the throw. For openings that take real abuse, PDQ's KT bolt carries two roll pins instead of one.
