PDQ MJ131 Single Cylinder Deadbolt

Heavy Duty Mortise Cylinder Deadbolt

The PDQ MJ131 is the Single Cylinder function of the PDQ MJ Series Heavy Duty Mortise Cylinder Deadbolt.

The PDQ MJ Series is a heavy duty mortise cylinder deadbolt for 1-3/4" doors with a small mortise body type prep. It is a deadbolt only, with no latch or lever, so it is typically specified as a second, standalone locking point on a door that already has a separate lever lock or exit device.

The steel case is dichromated for corrosion resistance and throws a 1" stainless steel deadbolt. The MJ is UL listed for 3 hours on single doors up to 4'0" x 8'0", is non-handed except for the 134 classroom function, and is backed by a ten year limited warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the MJ different from a mortise lockset like the PDQ MR Series?
The MJ is a mortise deadbolt only, with no latch or lever. The MR Series combines lever, latch and deadbolt in one case. The MJ is typically added as a second locking point on a door that already has a lever lock or exit device.

Is the MJ deadbolt ADA compliant?
The standard thumbturn is ADA compliant. The 134LH and 134RH classroom function uses a different thumbturn that is not ADA compliant.

Does the MJ offer an occupancy indicator?
Yes. A vacant/occupied indicator is available, useful for private offices, exam rooms or restrooms.

PDQ MJ131630L – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the MJ131 deadbolt latch into my existing strike prep?
The MJ131 throws a 1 inch stainless steel deadbolt and ships with a 2-1/4 x 1 inch stainless strike. If the frame prep in your jamb matches that strike footprint and depth, it drops in; if the existing deadbolt had a shorter throw or a wider strike plate, plan on reworking the frame prep.
2) Should I use the MJ131 deadbolt or a mortise lockset like the PDQ MR Series?
The MJ131 is a deadbolt only, no latch and no lever, so by itself it will not let anyone through the door. Use it as a second, standalone locking point on an opening that already has a lever lock or an exit device. If you need latching and locking in one case, go to the MR Series mortise lock, which combines lever, latch and deadbolt.
3) Can the MJ131 be keyed into our existing Best SFIC master key system?
Yes. The MJ131 can be ordered with SFIC prep taking a 6 or 7-pin small format core compatible with Best, Falcon and Arrow, and the Best SFIC keyways A through R, WA through WH and TB/TD/TE are all orderable, along with PDQ exclusive SFIC keyways. Keying options include master keyed, master keyed to existing bittings, construction master keyed, keyed alike or keyed different, and it can be keyed into an existing master key system.
4) What cylinder do I have to specify when ordering the MJ131 deadbolt?
Pick one of ten cylinder configurations: conventional cylinder, less cylinder, SFIC prep with a 6-pin or 7-pin core, SFIC prep less core, SFIC prep with a brass or plastic construction core, Schlage LFIC prep with a Schlage core, LFIC prep less core, or LFIC prep with a construction core. It takes a 6 or 7-pin mortise cylinder; SCC (Schlage C compatible) is the standard keyway. Keyway and keying are both required selections, so if your locksmith is supplying cores, order a less core or less cylinder version.
5) Do I need to order a hand for the MJ131 deadbolt?
No. The MJ131 single cylinder function is non-handed, so one part works on a left or right hand door. Handing only comes into play on the 134 classroom function of the MJ Series, which is ordered as 134LH or 134RH.
6) Is the thumbturn on the PDQ MJ131 deadbolt ADA compliant?
The standard thumbturn used on the MJ131 is ADA compliant. The exception within the MJ Series is the 134 classroom function, which uses a different thumbturn that is not ADA compliant.
7) Does the MJ131 deadbolt meet TAA requirements for a government job?
The MJ Series deadbolt is TAA compliant, with country of origin Taiwan, which is what federal and military specs generally ask for on this kind of hardware.
8) Can I order the MJ131 in a Sargent, Yale or Corbin Russwin keyway instead of Schlage?
Yes. SCC (Schlage C) is standard, but the conventional keyway list also covers Arrow AR1, Corbin 59A1, 60 and L4, Russwin D1 and 981, Schlage E and C-K, Sargent LA and RA-RC, Accentra (Yale) E1R and GA, Falcon E-R, Kwikset, and the restricted PDQ TA keyway for grandmaster systems.
9) Can I get a vacant/occupied indicator on the MJ131 for a restroom or exam room?
Yes, a vacant/occupied indicator is available on the MJ deadbolt, which is the usual pick for single-occupancy restrooms, exam rooms and private offices where someone outside needs to see the door is in use.
10) Will the MJ131 deadbolt hold up on exterior or high-humidity auxiliary doors?
The case is steel, dichromated for corrosion resistance, and the deadbolt and strike are both stainless steel. For coastal or washdown areas the stainless finishes, 629 bright or 630 satin stainless, are the sensible pick over the brass and bronze options.
11) What finishes does the PDQ MJ131 deadbolt come in to match our other door hardware?
Seven: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 flat black, 629 bright stainless and 630 satin stainless. Those are standard BHMA finish numbers, so matching to existing levers or exit devices on the other openings is a matter of specifying the same number.
12) How many keys come with a PDQ MJ131 deadbolt?
Two keys per lock. On a large rekey or multi-door order that is worth knowing up front, since most property managers want a third key per opening for the office board and that has to be cut separately.
