Extra Heavy Duty Commercial Auxiliary Deadbolt

The PDQ KT121 is the Blank Single Cylinder function (ANSI/BHMA E1161) of the PDQ KT Series Extra Heavy Duty Deadbolt.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the KT Series extra heavy duty?
The KT bolt contains two concealed 1/4" case-hardened steel roll pins for added resistance to sawing and drilling attacks beyond PDQ's other deadbolt duty tiers. It pairs this with a wrought brass scalp and reinforced zinc diecast rose.

When should a KT deadbolt be specified instead of a KM or KV?
The KT is intended for extra heavy duty, high-abuse exterior doors, high-vandalism areas and facilities needing maximum forced-entry resistance. The KM is built for standard heavy duty commercial exterior doors and the KV for lighter-duty interior or light commercial use.

What door thickness and backset does the KT fit?
The KT is built for standard 1-3/4" doors with a 2-1/8" diameter door prep and supports a 2-3/4" (default) or 2-3/8" backset. Other door thicknesses are available by contacting the factory.

PDQ KT121626L – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the "blank single cylinder" function on the PDQ KT121 deadbolt actually mean?
The KT121 is keyed on the outside only, with a blank plate (no thumbturn, no key) on the inside. The bolt can only be thrown or retracted with a key from the outside. That is ANSI/BHMA function E1161. Use it where you do not want the door to be deadlocked from inside, such as stockroom or utility doors. If someone inside needs to operate the bolt, the KT121 is the wrong function, and an ADA thumbturn is offered as a special order.
2) Will the PDQ KT121 deadbolt fit my existing 2-1/8 inch bore on a 1-3/4 inch door?
Yes. The KT121 is built for standard 1-3/4 inch doors with a 2-1/8 inch diameter cross bore, which is the common commercial deadbolt prep. Backset is 2-3/4 inches by default with 2-3/8 inches available, so it drops into either standard bore location. For door thicknesses other than 1-3/4 inches, PDQ handles those as a factory request.
3) Will the KT121 latch into the strike already in my frame, or do I need new frame prep?
The bolt throws a full 1 inch, and a 2-3/4 x 1-1/8 inch strike with a dust box ships with the lock. If your frame already has a standard 2-3/4 x 1-1/8 inch deadbolt strike cutout, the supplied strike drops into it. The 1 inch brass bolt needs a pocket deep enough to take the full throw, so on an older shallow strike pocket plan on drilling the frame deeper.
4) Can I key the PDQ KT121 into my building's existing Schlage master key system?
Yes. The KT121 uses a 6-pin brass mortise cylinder keyed to 5 pins, with SCC (Schlage C) as the standard keyway, and it can be master keyed MK, CMK or GMK or keyed into an existing master key system. On the order you pick the keying: KD keyed different, KA2/KA4/KA keyed alike, OB zero-bitted with two blank keys, MK, KE master keyed to existing bittings, or CMK construction master keyed. Keyed versions ship with two keys per lock.
5) My facility is standardized on Sargent, not Schlage. What keyways can the KT121 be ordered in?
Fourteen keyway choices are offered, so you can match most existing systems: Arrow AR1, Corbin 59A1, Corbin 60, Corbin L4, Russwin D1, Schlage E, Schlage C, Schlage C-K, Sargent LA, Sargent RA-RC, Accentra (Yale) E1R, Accentra (Yale) GA, Falcon E-R, and PDQ's restricted TA keyway for grandmaster systems with up to four masters. Keyway is a required selection when you order.
6) What backset and faceplate options do I have to pick when ordering a PDQ KT deadbolt?
Backset is a required selection, and it bundles the faceplate style: 234 (2-3/4 inch backset, 2-1/4 x 1 inch faceplate with square corner filler for 1-1/8 inch width), 234R (same with a 1/4 inch radius faceplate), 234D (2-3/4 inch with drive-in bolt), and the same three at 2-3/8 inch backset as 238, 238R and 238D. Choose radius or square to match the existing edge mortise, or the drive-in bolt where there is no faceplate mortise at all.
7) Do I need to order the KT121 for a left or right hand door?
No handing to specify. The KT121 deadbolt is non-handed, so the same part works on a left or right swing, inswing or outswing. That makes it easy to stock one part number across a building.
8) Should I buy the KT121 with a cylinder or less cylinder?
Two cylinder options are offered. Conventional Cylinder comes keyed with the PDQ mortise cylinder, which is what most buyers want. Less Cylinder ships without one, so a locksmith can install the facility's own cylinder, high security or interchangeable core. Pick Less Cylinder only if you already have the cylinder on hand, since the lock will not operate without it.
9) What makes the PDQ KT heavier duty than the KM or KV deadbolt, and which should I specify?
The KT bolt is brass with two concealed 1/4 inch case-hardened steel roll pins that resist sawing and drilling, over a wrought brass scalp and reinforced zinc diecast rose. Specify KT for high-abuse exterior doors, high-vandalism areas, detention-adjacent spaces, and anywhere forced-entry resistance is the priority. PDQ's KM is the standard heavy duty choice for ordinary commercial exterior doors, and the KV is for lighter interior or light commercial openings.
10) What finishes does the PDQ KT121 deadbolt come in, and can I get a different finish inside and out?
Five finishes: 605 Bright Brass, 606 Satin Brass, 613E Dark Oxidized Satin Bronze, 625 Bright Chrome and 626 Satin Chrome. All five are available with or without a cylinder. Split finishes are handled through Customer Service, and when you request one you designate the outside trim first, then the inside.
11) How do I build the full PDQ part number for a KT121 order?
The base model is KT121, then the finish code and the cylinder option, for example KT121605D in Bright Brass with a conventional cylinder or KT121605L less cylinder. On top of that you select backset/faceplate, keyway and keying, all three of which are required to complete the order.
