Frequently Asked Questions

Does the KM deadbolt accept small format interchangeable cores?
Yes. With a conventional cylinder it fits doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick, and with SFIC it fits doors 1-1/2 to 2 inches thick. SFIC cores are 6 or 7-pin and compatible with Best, Falcon and Arrow systems.

What is the difference between single cylinder, double cylinder and classroom functions?
Single cylinder uses a key outside and a thumbturn inside. Double cylinder requires a key on both sides, often used near glazed doors. Classroom function is keyed for controlled access in institutional settings.

Is the KM deadbolt fire rated?
It is UL 10C listed for 3-hour fire doors as an auxiliary lock on A label single doors up to 4 x 8 feet, and UL 10B listed for neutral pressure doors.

PDQ KM116630D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ KM116 deadbolt fit a 1-3/4 inch commercial door?
Yes, with either cylinder setup. The KM116 fits doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick when ordered with a conventional cylinder, and 1-1/2 to 2 inches thick when ordered with SFIC prep. Door prep is a 2-1/8 inch diameter cross bore, which is the standard bore already in most commercial doors. If your doors run thicker than 1-3/4 inches, order the SFIC version.
2) Does the KM116 deadbolt work with a 2-3/8 inch backset, or only 2-3/4?
Both. The KM116 ships standard with an adjustable backset that covers 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inches, so one lock handles either prep. Fixed backsets are also orderable: 234 for a fixed 2-3/4 inch, 238 for a fixed 2-3/8 inch, each with an R option for a 2-1/4 x 1 x 1/4 inch radius faceplate instead of the square one.
3) Can I key a PDQ KM116 into my existing Schlage or Best master key system?
Yes. SCC (Schlage C compatible) is the standard keyway, and the KM116 can be keyed into an existing master key system, including keyed to existing bittings (KE). Keyways are also available for Arrow AR1, Corbin 59A1 / 60 / L4, Russwin D1, Schlage E and C-K, Sargent LA and RA-RC, Accentra (Yale) E1R and GA, Falcon E-R, restricted PDQ TA, and the full run of Best SFIC sections (A through R, plus WA-WH, TB, TD, TE) and PDQ exclusive SFIC sections. Keying options include KD, 0-bitted, KA2/KA4/KA, MK and CMK.
4) Is the PDQ KM116 single cylinder deadbolt approved for a fire rated door?
It is UL 10C listed, 3-hour fire rated as an auxiliary lock on A label single doors up to 4 x 8 feet, and UL 10B listed for neutral pressure doors. Note the limitation: single doors, as an auxiliary lock, not as the primary latching device on a pair.
5) Will the KM116 latch into the strike plate already in my frame?
The bolt throws 1 inch and the supplied strike is 2-3/4 x 1-1/8 inches with a dust box included. If your existing frame prep matches that strike footprint and has pocket depth for a full 1 inch throw, it drops in; otherwise plan on reworking the frame to the supplied strike. The bolt itself is brass with a 1/4 inch case-hardened steel roll pin inside to resist sawing.
6) What cylinder options can I order the PDQ KM116 with, and can I get it less cylinder for my own cores?
Eight cylinder configurations: conventional cylinder, less cylinder, SFIC prep with a 6-pin core, SFIC prep with a 7-pin core, SFIC prep with a construction core, SFIC prep with a plastic construction core, SFIC prep less core, and Schlage LFIC prep less core. If you stock your own Best, Falcon or Arrow compatible small format cores, order an SFIC prep less core. Ordered with a conventional cylinder, it is a 6-pin brass rim insert cylinder keyed to 5 pins and comes with two keys.
7) Single cylinder or double cylinder deadbolt, which should I use on a storefront or glazed door?
The KM116 is the single cylinder function (ANSI/BHMA E1151): key outside, thumbturn inside. That is the right choice for most exterior doors and it keeps egress simple. On a door with glazing close to the lock, a double cylinder (key both sides) removes the thumbturn an intruder could reach through broken glass, but it also means nobody leaves without a key, so check your egress requirements first. The KM Series also offers a classroom function for controlled institutional access.
8) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand PDQ KM116?
No handing to specify. The KM116 is non-handed, so one part number covers either swing. What you do have to choose on the order is backset, keyway, keying, cylinder type and finish.
9) Does the KM116 deadbolt meet ADA requirements for a thumbturn?
The inside thumbturn is ADA compliant and the lock is listed as compliant with ADA and ICC/ANSI A117.1, so it suits accessible openings in schools, healthcare and government facilities where operable parts have to work without tight grasping or twisting. It is also TAA compliant for government procurement.
10) Can I get the KM116 with a construction core so trades can use it before turnover?
Yes. Order SFIC prep with a construction core or with a plastic construction core, and move to permanent cores at turnover. Construction master keying (CMK) is also available as a keying option, as is 0-bitted (OB) with two blank keys if you pin your own cylinders in house.
11) What finishes does the PDQ KM116 come in to match the rest of my hardware?
Six finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 flat black, 626 satin chrome, and 630 satin stainless steel. For standardizing across a building, 626 and 630 are the usual commercial choices. The front, strike and scalp come in stainless steel or wrought brass with a reinforced diecast rose.
12) Is the KM116 heavy enough for a high traffic school or retail entry?
That is what the KM Series is built for. It is a commercial heavy duty deadbolt intended for high-traffic openings such as school, retail and office exteriors, with a 1 inch brass bolt pinned with case-hardened steel and stainless or wrought brass front, strike and scalp. It is a mechanical lock, not electronic, so there is nothing to power or wire.
