Pemko 2170DV 36 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Pemko 2170 door bottom block airflow to a room that needs return air under the door?
No, and that is deliberate. The notched-fin gasket on the 2170 allows up to 50 percent free air flow while still sealing against light and drafts, so it can go on doors where the HVAC design pulls return air under the leaf. If you want a full seal with no transfer air, order the unnotched insert version instead.
2) Do I need a threshold to go with a Pemko 2170 door bottom?
The 2170 seals against whatever surface is under the door. On an exterior or rated opening it is normally paired with a threshold so the vinyl has a flat, hard surface to bear on rather than carpet or an uneven slab, and so the sweep is not dragging on finish flooring. Order the threshold separately; the door bottom does not include one.
3) Should I use a U-shaped door bottom or a surface-mounted door sweep?
A U-shaped bottom like the 2170 cups the bottom edge of the door and is fastened through both faces, so it seals the full bottom edge and stays put under traffic, but it requires the door to be off the hinges or at least accessible on both sides and it is sized to one door thickness (1-3/4 inch here). A surface sweep screws to one face only and can go on without pulling the door, which is the faster retrofit but a less complete seal. On a rated opening or a door that gets abused, the U-shape is the one that gets specified.
4) What is the Eco-V insert on the Pemko 2170 and how is it different from standard vinyl?
Eco-V is a bio-based dual durometer material, free of phthalates and heavy metals, used in place of conventional vinyl in the 2170. Dual durometer means a firmer body carrying a softer sealing edge, so it compresses against the floor without going limp. Pemko rates it for longer service life than standard vinyl with good chemical resistance to adhesives and mild cleaning solutions, which matters on floors that get mopped daily.
5) Does the Pemko 2170 door bottom meet indoor air quality requirements for a school or hospital?
It is GREENGUARD Gold certified, meaning it meets strict chemical emissions limits for indoor air quality. That is the certification typically called out for schools, healthcare facilities, and other sensitive occupancies, and it is often what lets a bottom seal count toward a green building submittal on those projects.
6) What color is the seal on the 36 inch Pemko 2170 with the Eco-V insert?
The 36 inch Eco-V version comes with a dark brown insert. If you are standardizing a run of openings across a building, that is the seal color you will be matching on every door in the set.
