1) Will a Pemko SA Series automatic door bottom seal a fire rated wood door opening?
Yes. The SA Series automatic door bottom is Fire Rated to UL10C Positive Pressure and cUL Listed 4L10, and it is smoke tested to UL1784. It is also air infiltration tested and BHMA certified. It is made for architectural doors and wood doors, so a fire rated wood door leaf is the intended application.
2) How much clearance does a surface mount automatic door bottom need on the face of the door?
The housing is 1/2 inch wide and 1-3/8 inches high. Surface mount means it fastens to the face of the door bottom rail rather than being let into a mortise, so you need 1-3/8 inches of clear rail height and 1/2 inch of projection off the face. Nothing on the stop side, closer arm, or bottom rail hardware can sit in that footprint. If you need the seal buried in the door edge, a surface mount unit is the wrong choice and a mortised automatic door bottom is what you want.
3) When the seal on my Pemko SA door bottom wears out, do I have to replace the whole unit?
No. The Eco-V insert is a separate replacement part, ordered as EV5. The aluminum housing stays on the door and you swap just the seal, which is the practical answer for a facility running these on a lot of openings.
4) Can I use a Pemko SA automatic door bottom on an exterior door?
Keep it on interior openings. The Eco-V insert has good resistance to adhesives and most mild cleaning solutions but only limited UV and weather resistance, so direct sun and weather exposure will shorten its life. A sweep drags on the floor all the time. The SA Series is an automatic door bottom: the seal retracts up into the aluminum housing while the door swings and drops as the door closes, so it clears carpet and finished flooring on the swing and still seals when shut. That drop is limited to 1/2 inch. Use the automatic bottom where the floor covering or threshold would chew up a fixed sweep, or where you need the smoke and air seal only when the door is closed.
