The Pemko 4131 is a plunger-actuated automatic door bottom for wood or hollow metal commercial doors. When the door closes, the plunger contacts the strike jamb and drops the seal bar against the floor, closing gaps up to 3/4" without manual adjustment. The unit is reversible and non-handed. 1) How big a gap under the door will the Pemko 4131 automatic door bottom actually close?
Up to 3/4 inch. The 4131 is plunger actuated: as the door swings shut the plunger hits the strike jamb and drives the seal bar down against the floor, so it takes up an undercut of 3/4 inch or less without anyone adjusting it. Measure from the bottom of the door to the finished floor at the worst point along the swing, not at the hinge edge. If that reading is over 3/4 inch, the 4131 will not reach the floor and you need to fix the gap with a threshold or a taller door bottom instead. Where the floor covering changes across the swing (tile to carpet, for example), measure over the carpet, since that is where the seal has to close.
2) Does the 4131 automatic door bottom mount on the face of the door or does it have to be routed in?
Either way. The 4131 takes a surface mount, screwed to the face of the door at the bottom rail, or a semi mortised mount where the housing sits partly recessed into the door bottom for a flatter look. End plates come with the unit for all mounting configurations, so you are not ordering a separate kit depending on which way you go. The aluminum housing is 19/32 inch wide and 1-27/32 inch high, which is the section you have to clear on the face of the door or rout for on a semi mortised install. Surface mounting is the quicker retrofit on an existing door because it needs no machining of the door itself.
3) Will an automatic door bottom like the Pemko 4131 work on a pair of doors with no mullion?
Think about what the plunger has to hit. The 4131 drops its seal when the plunger contacts the strike jamb as the door closes, so it needs something solid at the strike edge to push against. On a single door in a frame, that is the jamb and it works. On a pair with no mullion, the leading edge of the active leaf closes against the inactive leaf or its astragal rather than a jamb, so before ordering, confirm the plunger will land on a fixed surface at the right height. If there is nothing there for it to contact, the seal bar never drops and the unit does nothing.
4) Do I have to specify left hand or right hand when ordering a Pemko 4131 door bottom?
No handing to specify. The 4131 is reversible and non handed, and the handing is changed without taking the unit apart, so one part number covers a left hand and a right hand opening.
