The CFM83-HD3 can go on a 3-hour fire rated opening, but only with firepins installed per Pemko's requirements. The hinge alone doesn't carry the opening; the firepins are what make the assembly acceptable on the fire door. Order them along with the hinge and install them per the manufacturer's instructions, otherwise the hinge is a non-rated application only.
2) What does full mortise mean on a Pemko CFM continuous hinge, and what prep does my door need?
Full mortise means the hinge sets into a routed pocket in both the door edge and the frame rabbet, so the leaves sit flush and only the gear barrel shows when the door is closed. That prep has to exist before the hinge goes on. If your door and frame have no mortise pocket and you don't want to rout them, a full surface continuous hinge is the type to use instead, since it screws to the face of the door and frame with no cutting.
3) Is a continuous geared hinge better than three butt hinges for a heavy commercial door?
Different load behaviour. Butt hinges concentrate the door weight at three or four points on the frame, which is where hinge sag and screw pull-out start on a heavy or high traffic leaf. The CFM83-HD3 runs the full 83 inches and spreads the load down the entire edge, so the door stays in alignment and the frame doesn't take point loading. On an office, school, or hospital door that gets cycled all day, that's the reason to go continuous. On a light interior door that never moves, butts are simpler and need no mortise routing.
