1) Will the Select SL24 continuous hinge work on a 1-3/4 inch hollow metal door?
Yes, 1-3/4 inch is the door thickness the SL24 full mortise geared hinge is built for. On the load side, it handles doors up to 48 inches wide in 16 gauge hollow metal minimum, or 1/8 inch aluminum minimum. Thinner skins than that are outside what the hinge is rated to carry, because a geared continuous hinge transfers load along the whole leaf into the door edge and frame rabbet.
2) How heavy a door can a Select SL24 heavy duty geared hinge carry?
The heavy duty SL24 is tested per BHMA standards for doors up to 200 lb in high-frequency traffic, and up to 400 lb in medium-frequency traffic, with no frame or door reinforcement needed. Push it to 600 lb on low-frequency openings and you need Rivnuts in both the frame and the door. If you are hanging a lead-lined door or anything up to 1,000 lb, that is the Heavy Duty LL version, which adds fastener holes for the extra load.
3) Is the Select SL24 continuous hinge fire rated?
Fire rated for 90 minutes as standard. A 3-hour rating is available as an option at extra cost. That covers the common corridor and stair opening; if your drawing calls for a 3-hour label you have to specify it rather than assume the stock hinge carries it.
4) What clearance do I need at the door edge and frame for a Select SL24 full mortise hinge?
Closed, the SL24 needs 11/32 inch clearance on a bevel edge door and 5/16 inch on a square edge door. Open at 90 degrees, allow 7/16 inch for the cap to rotate. That 7/16 inch is the number people miss on a retrofit: if there is a stop, a wall return or an adjacent frame inside that arc, the caps will bind before the door reaches 90.
5) What length Select SL24 hinge do I need for my door height?
Standard stock lengths are 83, 85, 95 and 120 inches, sized to nominal door heights, and custom lengths are made to order. A continuous hinge runs essentially the full leaf, so you pick by door height rather than by leaf count the way you would with butt hinges. Stocked here in 83 inch and 95 inch, in Dark Bronze and anodized aluminum.
6) Does a continuous geared hinge meet ANSI Grade 1 for a high traffic entrance?
The SL24 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.26-2006 Grade 1, which is the top grade in the continuous hinge standard. It is the reason these go on high-abuse openings: the geared leaf spreads the load down the whole door edge instead of concentrating it at three or four butt locations, so the door edge does not sag or tear out under school, hospital or retail entrance traffic.
7) Can I use a door closer with a Select SL24 continuous hinge?
Conventional overhead surface closers, concealed sliding arm overhead closers and floor closers all work with SELECT hinges. The one that does not is a pivot-type floor closer with a fixed center pivot, because that pivot fixes the swing axis in a spot that conflicts with the hinge's own gear axis. On a retrofit where a pivot floor closer is already in the opening, that closer has to be replaced, so budget for it before you order the hinge.
8) Is a full mortise continuous hinge the right type, or do I need a half surface or half mortise?
Full mortise, which is what the SL24 is, means both leaves get let into the door edge and the frame rabbet, so nothing shows when the door is closed and the hinge sits in a prepped opening. That is the type for a standard hollow metal or aluminum opening you are prepping new or that already has a routed edge. If the door edge cannot be machined, a lead-lined or otherwise unmachinable door for instance, a full mortise hinge is the wrong choice and you want a surface-applied continuous hinge instead. Clearance to plan for: 5/16 inch on a square edge door, 11/32 inch on a bevel edge.
9) Do I need to order a Select SL24 continuous hinge left or right handed?
Handing is not an ordering choice on the SL24. You order by length, finish and duty level. What you do need to settle before ordering is door thickness (this is a 1-3/4 inch hinge), door weight and traffic frequency to land on the right duty level, and whether the opening carries a fire label, since the standard hinge is rated 90 minutes and 3 hours is a cost option.
10) Are Rivnuts required to install a Select SL24 heavy duty hinge?
Not for most openings. Up to 200 lb high-frequency or 400 lb medium-frequency doors, the heavy duty SL24 is tested with no frame or door reinforcement at all, so standard fastening into 16 gauge hollow metal or 1/8 inch aluminum is enough. Rivnuts in the frame and door come in above that: they are required to reach 600 lb on low-frequency openings, and recommended on extremely tall, heavy or wide doors with the LL version.
11) Does the Select SL24 hinge need lubrication or maintenance once it is installed?
No greasing schedule. The SL24 runs on self-lubricating polyester thrust bearings inside an extruded 6063 T6 aluminum alloy body, so there is nothing to oil on a maintenance round. For a property manager standardizing across a building, that is the practical difference from butt hinges with steel bearings on a high-cycle entrance.
