1) Will the Select SL24 continuous hinge work on a 1-3/4 inch hollow metal door?
That is exactly what the SL24 is built for. It is a full mortise geared continuous hinge for 1-3/4 inch doors, with a maximum door width of 48 inches in 16 gauge hollow metal (minimum gauge) or 1/8 inch aluminum (minimum). Go wider than 48 inches or thinner than 16 gauge and you are outside what the standard duty hinge was tested to carry.
2) Is the SELECT SL24 geared hinge fire rated?
Yes. The SL24 carries a 90 minute fire rating, and a 3-hour rating is available as an option at extra cost. It also meets ANSI/BHMA A156.26-2006 Grade 1, which is the spec most institutional and government submittals call for on continuous geared hinges.
3) How much clearance does a full mortise continuous geared hinge need at the frame?
With the door closed, the SL24 needs 11/32 inch clearance on a bevel edge door or 5/16 inch on a square edge door. Swing it to 90 degrees and you need 7/16 inch clearance for the cap to rotate. That last number is the one that bites on retrofits, since an existing butt hinge opening was never detailed for cap rotation.
4) Can I use a door closer with a SELECT continuous hinge?
Most closers are fine. Conventional overhead surface closers, concealed sliding arm overhead closers and floor closers all work with SELECT hinges. The exception is a pivot-type floor closer with a fixed center pivot, because that pivot conflicts with the geared hinge running the full height of the door. Those have to be replaced as part of the job, so budget for it before you order.
5) Why choose a continuous geared hinge over three butt hinges on a high traffic door?
A geared continuous hinge distributes the door load along the full height of the opening instead of concentrating it at three points, which is why it is specified for high traffic abuse. The SL24 uses extruded 6063 T6 aluminum with self-lubricating polyester thrust bearings, so there is no pin to wear out and nothing to grease. On a standard duty opening it carries up to 200 lb with no frame or door reinforcement, which matters on 16 gauge hollow metal frames that would otherwise need reinforcing plates.
6) Is a full mortise continuous hinge the right type for my opening, or do I need a half surface or half mortise?
Full mortise is the SL24's configuration, and it needs both the door edge and the frame rabbet mortised to receive the hinge leaves. That works when you are hanging a new hollow metal or aluminum door, or when the existing frame can take the prep and you have the closed clearance to give it, 11/32 inch on a bevel edge or 5/16 inch on a square edge. If the frame cannot be mortised, as on many retrofits into existing masonry or where the door is already hung, full mortise is the wrong choice and a half surface or full surface continuous hinge is what mounts to the face instead.
7) Will one SL24 hinge match the other doors in my building if some are wider or heavier?
Not necessarily, and it is worth checking before you standardize. Standard duty SL24 covers 1-3/4 inch doors up to 48 inches wide and 200 lb at medium frequency. Openings in the same building that are wider than 48 inches, heavier than 200 lb, or on high traffic like a main entry or a corridor cross door need the heavy duty version instead. The finish and the geared full mortise look stays consistent across the range, so a mixed order still reads as one hardware standard on the doors.
8) Do I need Rivnuts or frame reinforcement to install a SELECT SL24 standard duty hinge?
No. Standard duty is tested to hold medium-frequency doors up to 200 lb with no frame or door reinforcement, so you are fastening into 16 gauge hollow metal or 1/8 inch aluminum as-is. Rivnuts come into the conversation on the heavier versions, they are required for low-frequency doors up to 600 lb and recommended on extremely tall, heavy or wide openings with the LL hinge.
