1) Will the Select SL21 swing clear continuous hinge fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
Yes. The SL21 standard duty geared continuous hinge is set up for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors as standard, which covers both the usual commercial 1-3/4 inch leaf and older 1-3/8 inch interior doors. For thicker doors, 2 to 2-1/4 inches, long barrel nuts are available to make it work.
2) What is the widest door a Select SL21 hinge can hang?
48 inches maximum door width, and the leaf has to be at least 16 gauge hollow metal or at least 1/8 inch aluminum. Wider than 48 inches, or a thinner skin than that, and the SL21 standard duty is the wrong hinge for the opening.
3) How much clearance do I need between the door and frame for a Select SL21 continuous hinge?
5/32 inch of clearance is required so the cap can rotate. Full surface geared hinges mount on the face of the door and frame rather than in a mortise, so check that gap on the existing opening before you order, especially on a retrofit where the door was hung on butt hinges.
4) Can I keep my existing door closer if I switch to a Select continuous geared hinge?
Conventional overhead surface closers, concealed sliding arm overhead closers, and floor closers all work alongside SELECT hinges. The one exception is a pivot type floor closer with a fixed center pivot, which conflicts with the hinge and has to be replaced. Check which floor closer is in the opening before you order.
5) What does swing clear mean on a continuous geared hinge, and when do I need it?
A swing clear hinge moves the door leaf out of the opening when the door is swung back, so the frame gives you the full clear width instead of losing an inch or two to the door face. Property managers and healthcare or hospital facilities specify it where a gurney, wheelchair, or cart has to pass through a narrow existing frame. If your opening already has the clear width you need, a standard full surface continuous hinge does the same job without the swing clear geometry.
6) What is the Select SL21 hinge made of, and will it hold up on a high traffic entrance?
Extruded 6063 T6 aluminum alloy running on self lubricating polyester thrust bearings. Geared continuous hinges carry the door load along the full height of the leaf rather than at three or four points, which is why they are used on abusive high traffic openings where butt hinges sag and the door starts dragging. The bearings need no periodic lubrication.
7) Does a continuous geared hinge need to be ordered by hand?
Full surface continuous geared hinges like the SL21 are non handed as a hinge, but they do get installed on one specific side of the opening, so you order by door height and door thickness rather than by left or right hand. What you do need to confirm is the leaf material and gauge, at least 16 gauge hollow metal or 1/8 inch aluminum, the door width up to 48 inches, and the 5/32 inch clearance for cap rotation.
