LOAD/FREQUENCY RATINGS: For 1-3/8" – 1-3/4" doors standard; long barrel nuts available for 2" – 2-1/4" doors. 48" max. door width in 16 gauge hollow metal (min.) or 1/8" aluminum (min.). Heavy Duty – Tested per BHMA standards. Up to 200 lb. doors (high-frequency) and up to 400 lb. doors (medium-frequency) without frame or door reinforcement; up to 600 lb. doors (low-frequency) with the use of Rivnuts in the frame.
FINISHES: All SL54 hinges are stocked in Clear and Dark Bronze anodized aluminum. Custom anodized or painted finishes are available. Product painted or anodized in the field voids the SELECT hinge warranty.
CLOSERS: Conventional overhead surface, concealed sliding arm overhead or floor closers may be used with SELECT hinges. Pivot-type floor closers (with a fixed, conflicting center pivot) must be replaced.

1) Will the Select SL54 continuous hinge work on a 1-3/4 inch door?
Yes. The SL54 swing clear half surface geared hinge is set up for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors as standard. If your door is 2 to 2-1/4 inches thick, you need the long barrel nuts, which are available for that range.
2) How heavy a door can a SL54 continuous geared hinge carry?
It depends on your traffic. The SL54 handles doors up to 200 lb in high-frequency openings and up to 400 lb in medium-frequency, both without reinforcing the frame or door. For low-frequency openings you can go to 600 lb, but that requires Rivnuts in the frame. Max door width is 48 inches in 16 gauge hollow metal minimum or 1/8 inch aluminum minimum.
3) How much clearance do I need at the hinge edge for the SL54?
7/16 inch of clearance is required for cap rotation. If your existing frame and door leave less than that at the hinge edge, the caps will bind and the hinge will not cycle properly, so check it before you order.
4) Is the Select SL54 continuous hinge fire rated?
Yes, it is fire rated, and the fasteners carry a 90 minute fire rating. The hinge is tested to Grade 1 heavy duty under BHMA standards and meets ANSI A250.4 1994 cycle testing.
5) Can I use a door closer with the SL54 geared hinge?
Conventional overhead surface closers, concealed sliding arm overhead closers and floor closers all work with it. The one exception is a pivot type floor closer with a fixed center pivot, which conflicts with the continuous hinge geometry and has to be replaced. Sort that out before the hinge goes on the opening.
6) What is the SL54 hinge made of and will it hold up in a high traffic entrance?
Extruded 6063 T6 aluminum alloy with self-lubricating polyester thrust bearings, running on a continuous gear rather than knuckles. Geared continuous hinges are built to take abuse from high traffic openings, and the load spreads over the full height of the door instead of concentrating at three or four butt hinge points, which is why sagging doors get retrofitted with these.
7) Do I have to remove the door frame to install a half surface continuous hinge?
No. A half surface hinge mounts on the surface of the door leaf and into the frame rabbet, so it goes onto an existing opening without replacing the frame or the door. That is what makes the SL54 a retrofit for an opening with worn butt hinges, provided you have the 7/16 inch of clearance the caps need to rotate and your door is within 48 inches wide and the load ratings.
