LOAD/FREQUENCY RATINGS: For 1-3/4" doors. 48" max. door width in 16 gauge hollow metal (min.) or 1/8" aluminum (min.).

FINISHES: All SL41 hinges are stocked in Clear and Dark Bronze anodized aluminum. Custom anodized or painted finishes are available. Product painted or anodized in the field voids the SELECT hinge warranty.

CLOSERS: Conventional overhead surface, concealed sliding arm overhead or floor closers may be used with SELECT hinges. Pivot-type floor closers (with a fixed, conflicting center pivot) must be replaced.

A swing clear hinge carries the door clear of the opening when it swings, so the leaf itself stops obstructing the clear width. That matters on corridors, patient room doors, and any opening where the door thickness is eating into the usable passage. The SL41 is the swing clear version of Select's Grade 1 heavy duty geared continuous hinge, extruded 6063 T6 aluminum with self-lubricating polyester thrust bearings. If you don't need the door to clear the opening, a standard full mortise or half surface continuous geared hinge is the simpler pick, because swing clear demands a 2-1/4 inch frame face that not every frame has.
2) Will the Select SL41 swing clear hinge work on my frame?
Only if the frame face is at least 2-1/4 inches. That clearance is what lets the hinge cap rotate through full travel, and on a narrower face the cap binds. The hinge also assumes a 1/16 inch door inset. Measure the frame face before you order, because this is the single most common reason a swing clear application fails.
3) How heavy a door will the Select SL41 heavy duty hinge carry?
Tested per BHMA standards, the standard Heavy Duty SL41 handles doors up to 200 lb at high frequency and up to 400 lb at medium frequency with no frame or door reinforcement. Push to 600 lb at low frequency and you need Rivnuts in both the frame and the door. Maximum door width is 48 inches in 16 gauge hollow metal minimum or 1/8 inch aluminum minimum.
4) What is the difference between the SL41 Heavy Duty and Heavy Duty LL versions?
The LL adds extra fastener holes. Same hinge otherwise, but the additional fastening carries low-frequency doors up to 1,000 lb, which covers most lead-lined doors. On extremely tall, heavy or wide leaves, Rivnuts in the frame and door are recommended with the LL. Both duty grades are offered in all four stock lengths and both stock finishes.
5) Is the Select SL41 fire rated?
Yes, the SL41 is fire rated, with fasteners rated for 90 minutes. It is a Grade 1 hinge tested to ANSI A250.4 1994.
6) Can I use a door closer with the Select SL41 continuous geared hinge?

It also includes a door edge protector, which covers the hinge edge on doors that take cart and gurney traffic.
9) I have a 52 inch wide door. Can I use the SL41 on it?
Not within the published rating. The SL41 is rated to a 48 inch maximum door width, and the door needs to be 16 gauge hollow metal minimum or 1/8 inch aluminum minimum. Past 48 inches you are outside what the hinge was tested to carry and should look at a hinge rated for the wider leaf.
