1) Will the Select Hinges SL21 swing clear continuous hinge work on a 1-3/4 inch door?
Yes. The SL21 is set up for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors as standard, which covers both the usual commercial 1-3/4 inch leaf and older 1-3/8 interior doors. If your door is thicker, 2 to 2-1/4 inches, you order long barrel nuts for it rather than a different hinge. Door width is capped at 48 inches, and the door has to be at least 16 gauge hollow metal or 1/8 inch aluminum.
2) What does swing clear mean on a continuous hinge, and when do I need one?
A swing clear hinge carries the door out past the frame when it opens, so the door leaf and the hinge itself stop eating into the doorway. You gain back roughly the thickness of the door in clear opening width. That is why they go on patient room doors, restrooms, and any opening where a gurney, a wheelchair, or a cart has to get through a frame that was never sized generously. On a standard opening where clear width is not tight, a full surface continuous hinge without the swing clear geometry does the same load job and mounts flatter.
3) What length SL21 hinge do I order for my door height?
Standard stocked lengths are 83, 85, 95 and 120 inches, which cover nominal door heights, and custom lengths are made to order. The rule of thumb on continuous geared hinges is that the hinge runs nearly the full door height, so measure the leaf and take the standard length that matches the nominal height rather than trying to trim one down. Cutting a geared hinge in the field is not the fix.
4) How much clearance does the SL21 need between the door and frame?
5/32 inch clearance is required for cap rotation. That is the gap the hinge cap needs to turn through, and it is the number to check first on a retrofit, because an existing opening that was hung tight on butt hinges may not give it to you. Confirm the gap before you order, not after the old hinges are off the door.
5) Can I keep my existing door closer if I switch to a SELECT continuous hinge?
Conventional overhead surface closers, concealed sliding arm overhead closers, and floor closers all work alongside SELECT hinges. The one that does not is a pivot type floor closer with a fixed center pivot, because that pivot fights the hinge geometry. Those have to come out and be replaced. Worth checking on any older aluminum or glass front entrance, since that is where fixed pivot floor closers turn up most.
6) Why replace butt hinges with a geared continuous hinge on a high traffic door?
A continuous geared hinge spreads the door load along the entire edge instead of concentrating it at two or three butt locations, which is why these get specified for openings that take abuse from high traffic. The SL21 runs on self lubricating polyester thrust bearings, so there is nothing to grease on a maintenance route. For a property manager watching the same three doors sag and get re-shimmed every year, that is the reason to make the change.
7) Is the SL21 aluminum hinge strong enough for an exterior or corrosive opening?
The SL21 body is extruded 6063 T6 aluminum alloy, the same temper used for commercial storefront and entrance framing, so it holds up in the same conditions that framing does and it will not rust. Anodized clear or dark bronze is the stocked finish. It is not stainless, so for a pool deck, a wash down kitchen, or a coastal salt exposure where stainless is written into the spec, this is not the substitute.
8) Do I need to reinforce the frame or door before installing a SELECT SL21 heavy duty hinge?
No reinforcement is needed up to 200 lb doors at high frequency or 400 lb at medium frequency, which covers most hollow metal and aluminum openings. Reinforcement only enters the picture above that: doors up to 600 lb at low frequency require Rivnuts installed in the frame. The frame and door still have to meet the minimum substrate, 16 gauge hollow metal or 1/8 inch aluminum, and door width tops out at 48 inches.
9) Full surface or full mortise continuous hinge, which one do I need?
The SL21 is full surface, meaning it mounts to the face of the door and the face of the frame with no routing. That is what makes it the retrofit choice: you are working with the openings you already have, no machining, no removing the door to a shop. A full mortise continuous hinge sets into the door and frame edges for a flush look, but it needs prep and is really a new door decision. On an existing building where you are replacing sagging butts across a floor of doors, full surface is the one that installs in an afternoon.
