1) Can Pemko PK33 perimeter gasketing be used on a fire-rated door opening?
PK33 silicone gasketing is fire rated to UL10C with positive pressure testing and smoke tested to UL1784-01, and it meets NFPA 105 for smoke door assemblies. It also carries Intertek (Warnock Hersey) testing and is BHMA certified. That is the pairing an inspector looks for on a rated opening: UL10C positive pressure on the fire side, UL1784 on smoke leakage. It is a commercial-duty seal, applied to the frame at the head and both jambs.
2) How wide a gap between the door and frame will Pemko PK33 gasketing actually close?
The PK33 bulb is 3/16 inch high and starts compressing at 3/16 inch, sealing gaps up to 1/16 inch. On a commercial opening the head and jamb clearance is normally around 1/8 inch, which sits inside that compression range. If your door is hung with a much wider gap than that, fix the hanging or shim the stop first, because no 3/16 inch seal will bridge it.
3) Does Pemko PK33 gasketing seal the bottom of the door, or do I still need a sweep?
PK33 goes on the frame only, sealing the top and both sides of the door. The gap at the floor is a separate item, so budget a door sweep or an automatic door bottom on the door itself, and a threshold if the opening is exterior. Perimeter gasketing plus a bottom seal is what makes a complete smoke or weather perimeter on a single door.
4) Can I add PK33 gasketing to an existing hollow metal frame that has no kerf slot?
Yes. PK33 is adhesive backed and sticks to the face of the frame stop, so there is no kerf to cut, no holes to drill and no screws. That makes it the retrofit choice on frames already installed and painted. Kerf-mounted gasketing is the alternative, but it needs a kerf groove in the frame, which is a factory or shop operation on new frames, not something you want to be routing in an occupied building. Wipe the stop clean and dry before you press the seal on, or the adhesive will let go at the corners.
5) Will perimeter gasketing stop my door from latching or make it hard to pull shut?
That is the usual worry with adding a seal to an opening that already has a closer, and PK33 is built around it. The seal takes very low closing force, and the bulb only begins to compress at 3/16 inch, so the door is not fighting the gasketing through its whole swing. Silicone also resists compression set at elevated temperature, so it does not flatten out and quit sealing after a summer in a mechanical room or a sunny exterior opening.
6) Will PK33 seal the meeting edge on a pair of doors?
No. PK33 handles the head and the two jambs, the frame perimeter. Where two door leaves meet there is no frame to stick it to, so a pair needs an astragal at the meeting stiles in addition to perimeter gasketing. Order the frame run and the astragal as separate items, and remember a double opening eats roughly twice the head length of a single.
7) Is PK33 silicone gasketing rated for exterior doors in cold climates or hot mechanical rooms?
Temperature range on the PK33 silicone runs -40 F to 250 F, so a walk-in cooler vestibule, an unheated northern exterior opening and a boiler room door are all inside the range. Silicone holds its flexibility across that span where a vinyl or foam seal stiffens and cracks in the cold. It also carries high ozone resistance and high resistance to flex fatigue, which is what a high traffic exterior opening cycling hundreds of times a day is really testing, and it is air infiltration tested for draft and energy loss.
8) Will PK33 gasketing fit a narrow frame stop?
The PK33 profile is 3/8 inch wide by 3/16 inch high, a low, narrow section meant for tighter door frames. Measure the flat face of your stop: you need 3/8 inch of clean, flat surface to land the adhesive on. Frames with a deeper stop take it fine, but if your stop face is under 3/8 inch the seal will hang over an edge and the adhesive bond will be short.
9) What colors does Pemko PK33 gasketing come in for matching painted or bronze frames?
Three colors: black, dark brown and white. Dark brown is the one that disappears on bronze and dark anodized frames, white on painted white or light frames, black on dark painted hollow metal and aluminum.
