B-LINE 13100R6513 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will this sensor drive a contactor coil or motor directly, or do I need a relay?
Plan on an interposing relay for anything beyond a small load. The 13100R6513 is rated 300 mA AC/DC at 20-264 Vac/15-30 Vdc, which is enough for a pilot relay, a PLC input, or a small solenoid, but not for a contactor coil with high inrush or any motor load.
2) Does this photoelectric sensor need a separate reflector or receiver on the other side?
No. It is a diffuse reflective sensor, so emitter and receiver are in one housing and it senses light bounced back off the target itself. Nothing mounts opposite it. If your application needs long range or reliable detection of dark, shiny, or irregular targets, a retroreflective or through-beam sensor is the better choice because those do require a reflector or a separate receiver unit.
3) Can this sensor be used in a washdown or outdoor location?
Yes. The environmental rating covers NEMA 1, 3, 4, 4X, 6, 12, 13 and IP69k, which takes in outdoor rain exposure, corrosive washdown, temporary submersion, and high pressure high temperature washdown typical of food and beverage plants. The housing is RIM polyurethane foam, a molded encapsulated body rather than a threaded metal barrel.
4) Can I wire this sensor straight into a PLC input card?
On DC it lands on a sinking arrangement: the output is NPN open collector at 15-30 Vdc, which pairs with a PLC input card configured for sinking sensors (common tied to V+). If your card is set up for sourcing PNP sensors, you need a different output style or an interposing relay. On AC the sensor switches L1 at 20-264 Vac up to 300 mA.
5) Will this sensor hold up in a freezer or in an unheated outdoor enclosure?
Operating range is -40 to 158 F (-40 to 70 C), so freezer rooms, cold docks, and unconditioned outdoor mounting are all inside spec. Note the cable is PVC jacketed, which stiffens considerably at the low end of that range, so route and secure it while it is warm and avoid tight bends once it is cold.
6) What happens if the output gets shorted in the field?
The 13100R6513 has latching short circuit protection. On a short the output shuts down and stays off rather than cycling, so you will not get chattering or repeated damage. Clear the fault and cycle power to the sensor to reset it.
7) Is there any way to tell at the sensor whether it is seeing the target?
An LED on the sensor lights when the output is ON, so a technician can stand at the machine and confirm detection without a meter or a trip to the panel. It is a single output indicator, so alignment is judged by whether the output latches on as the target passes.
