Pro-Lok SB15 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a 3/8 inch carbide safe bit go through hardplate, or do I need a different bit?
Hardplate is exactly what this one is ground for. The 9.5 mm tungsten carbide tip on the SB15 is diamond ground and uses a negative rake angle with a shortened chisel edge, which is the geometry that keeps a carbide tip from chipping out when it hits hardened steel. A standard HSS or cobalt bit will dull or grab on hardplate. What it does not do is give you depth past 5 inches of overall bit length, so for a deeper drill point you need a longer bit or an extension.
2) How do I order the right Pro-Lok safe bit size, and which model is the 3/8 by 5 inch one?
The 3/8 inch by 5 inch version is model SB15, and that is the single model on it, so there is no size or finish choice to make on the order. Pro-Lok runs the safe bit line by diameter and length, so if you need a different diameter or a longer reach you are ordering a different SB model, not an option on this one.
3) Do carbide safe drilling bits need coolant or a specific speed?
Run it slow with steady pressure. The SB15 tip is diamond ground carbide with a negative rake, which cuts by shearing hardened steel rather than by speed, and heat is what kills a carbide tip on hardplate. The description is explicit that the geometry is there to withstand drilling temperatures, but that assumes low RPM and constant feed, not a high-speed cordless drill leaned on in bursts.
