The 3/8” x 8” in. Safe Bit features a special 9.5 mm Tungsten Carbide tip with a unique negative rake angle and a shortened chisel edge that increases it’s effectiveness and reduces tip failure. Pro-Lok SB16 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the Pro-Lok SB16 safe bit used for?
The SB16 is a safe drilling bit for locksmiths working through hardplate to gain entry into a safe. It uses a tungsten carbide tip diamond ground for sharpness so it holds up to the heat and load of hardplate drilling. It is not a general-purpose masonry or metal bit.
2) Why does the Pro-Lok safe bit have a negative rake angle?
The negative rake angle plus a shortened chisel edge keeps the carbide from digging and chipping when it contacts hardplate. That is what cuts tip failure on the abrasive, hardened material safe makers use, where a conventional positive-rake bit tends to snap or burn.
3) Is the Pro-Lok SB16 the same thing as a Butter Bit?
Yes. Pro-Lok calls this line the Butter Bit, and the SB16 is the 3/8 inch by 8 inch model in that family. If you are ordering by model, ask for SB16.
4) Can I use the Pro-Lok safe bit in a cordless drill?
Hardplate drilling wants a slow, high-torque drill with steady feed pressure and the bit held square to the plate. The carbide tip cuts by abrasion, not speed, so high RPM burns it. Most locksmiths run a drill rig or press against the safe door rather than freehanding a cordless.
