2) I pulled a mortise lock out of an apartment door and want to put in a knob lock. Will this plate let me do that?
That is exactly the job it is built for. The mortise pocket in the edge of the door leaves an 86 cutout; the Pro-Lok filler plate caps that pocket and gives you a 161 prep so a cylindrical latch can go in. Note the lock center line sits 3/8 inch off the center of the plate, so orientation matters when you mount it. It suits standard commercial or residential doors.
3) Does the plate mount centered on the old cutout?
No, and this is the detail people get wrong. The lock center line is offset 3/8 inch from the center of the plate, so the plate is not symmetrical about the latch hole. Dry fit it against the existing mortise pocket and mark before you drill.
4) Does the Pro-Lok filler plate come finished, or do I have to paint it?
It ships primed, not topcoated. Plan on painting it to match the door or the rest of the edge hardware. The plate itself is steel.
5) Do I need to buy screws separately for this mortise-to-cylindrical conversion plate?
No. Hardware is included with the plate. What you still have to supply is the cylindrical lockset and latch that goes into the new 161 prep.
