1) What is the Thomas & Betts ESL-2 slab insert used for?
The ESL-2 is a 90 degree slab insert that gets set into poured concrete so you can bring a conduit run out of the slab, either as a ceiling drop below or a floor-mounted outlet above. It also lets you pre-fabricate the whole in-slab conduit system before the pour, which is how most deck electricians stage this work. It is made for rigid and IMC conduit, and it is UL listed.
2) Will the ESL-2 insert work for a floor box or an outlet in the top of the slab?
Yes for a stub-up at the slab surface. The 90 degree geometry turns the conduit from horizontal in the deck to vertical, so it serves either a floor mount on top of the slab or a drop through the underside for a ceiling device below. What it does not do is act as a box, there is no device capacity in the insert itself, so the box or fitting at the finished face is a separate item on your order.
3) Is a die cast aluminum slab insert OK to embed in concrete?
The ESL-2 body is die cast aluminum, which is the standard material for this class of in-slab fitting and is why it is light enough at 0.86 lbs to nail off to formwork by hand. Aluminum in direct contact with wet concrete can react, so where a project spec calls out protection of embedded aluminum, follow that spec's coating requirement. The part is also RoHS compliant if your submittal package asks for it.
