1) Will a RACO 232SM 4 inch square box accept 3/4 inch conduit, or only 1/2 inch?
Both. The 232SM has ten 1/2 in. knockouts plus six 1/2 - 3/4 in. combination TKO's, so you can land 1/2 in. EMT anywhere on the box and step up to 3/4 in. at six of the openings by punching the outer ring.
2) Is the RACO 232SM square box for conduit or for NM cable (Romex)?
Conduit. The 232SM is a conduit-wiring box with plain knockouts and no cable clamps, so NM cable would need separate listed connectors at each knockout. For cable work, look for a box with built-in NM clamps instead.
3) Is the RACO 232SM box UL listed for commercial and industrial installations?
The 232SM is cULus Listed, so it is recognized for both US and Canadian installations and will satisfy an inspector on commercial or industrial conduit rough-in.
4) Does the RACO 232SM come with a mounting bracket or do I have to mount it myself?
No bracket on the 232SM. It is a plain welded box, so you fasten it through the back or side holes to your stud, strut, or surface, or support it off the conduit. If you want a box that nails directly to a stud face, you need a bracketed version.
5) What does the raised ground and pigtail on the RACO 232SM do for me on install?
It saves you a step. The 232SM ships with a raised ground boss and a factory-installed 10 in. #12 stranded copper pigtail, so the box is already bonded and you just wire-nut the pigtail into your equipment ground group instead of hunting for a ground screw and cutting a jumper.
6) How deep is the RACO 232SM 4 inch square box, and is there room for several conduit splices?
2-1/8 in. deep by 4 in. square, which is the deepest standard 4 in. square steel box body and the one electricians reach for when a box has multiple conduit entries and a bundle of splices. Box fill still has to be calculated for your conductor count.
7) Does a cover come with the RACO 232SM, and what kind do I need?
The 232SM is the box body only. You order the 4 in. square cover separately and match it to the use: a flat blank cover for a junction box, or a raised device cover sized to your device and the wall finish depth if you are mounting a switch or receptacle.
8) Is the RACO 232SM welded or drawn, and does that matter for commercial work?
Welded.
