RCI 0162 32D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the RCI 0162 electric strike work with my rim exit device?
The 0162 is built for rim exit devices with a Pullman latch, and it takes latch projections from 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch (13mm to 19mm). Measure how far your device's latch throws out of the case: anything inside that window engages the keeper. A 1/16 inch (1.5mm) mounting spacer ships with it if you need to bring the keeper in for deeper engagement. It is non-handed thanks to the horizontal solenoid, so one part number covers a left or right hand opening.
2) Do I have to cut the frame to install an RCI 0162 strike?
No cutting. The 0162 mounts completely on the surface of the frame, which is why it gets specified on retrofits where nobody wants a hollow metal, aluminum, or wood frame opened up. The body measures 1-3/4 x 9 x 3/4 inches, so you need that much flat, unobstructed frame face beside the latch. It fastens with hex socket head cap screws and has lockdown holes for a secure mount, and the hex key comes in the box.
3) What happens to the door if the power goes out on an RCI 0162 strike?
It stays locked. The 0162 is fail-secure, so on a power loss the keeper holds the exit device latch and the opening remains secured from the outside. Free egress is unaffected because the rim exit device itself still releases the latch from the inside. If your life safety plan or local authority calls for the outside to unlock on power failure, a fail-secure strike is the wrong choice and you want a fail-safe unit instead.
4) What voltage and current does the RCI 0162 strike need from my power supply?
Field-selectable 12/24VDC, and it will also run on 12-24VAC. Current draw is 500mA max at 12VDC, so size the supply for half an amp per strike at 12 volts. Selecting the voltage is done at the strike, not at ordering, so a single unit drops into either a 12V or a 24V access control system.
5) What is the LM option on the RCI 0162 and do I need it?
LM adds a latch monitor switch, and it is one of the two ways the 0162 is ordered: plain, or LM. The monitor reports back to your access control panel or alarm whether the latch is actually captured in the keeper, which is what you want when the system has to prove the door relatched rather than assume it. On a healthcare, school, or government opening where a held-open or unlatched door has to raise a condition, specify LM. On a straightforward electrified entry with no monitoring input available, the standard unit is enough. It cannot be added later, so pick it on the order.
6) I need a fire rated surface mount rim exit strike. Is the RCI 0162 the one to order?
For a fire rated opening, order the Dorma ES62F instead. It is a 3 hour fire rated surface mount rim exit strike and carries the fire rating outright. Same idea as the 0162, surface mounted to the frame face for a rim exit device, so the approach to the install does not change. RCI also builds fire rated versions of this strike under the F0162 and F0162LM designations if you want to stay with the 0 Series.
7) Is the RCI 0162 strong enough for a high traffic commercial entrance?
The 0162 is rated at 1,500 lbf static and 70 ft-lb dynamic, in a heavy-duty stainless steel housing with reinforcement that keeps it from twisting in a frame that is not perfectly true. The keeper is a one-piece conventional design with a single moving part, which spreads the load rather than concentrating it. It is a commercial-duty unit, not a residential one.
8) My exit device latch does not line up perfectly with the strike. Is there any adjustment?
Yes, up to 1/4 inch (6.4mm) of horizontal adjustment is built into the 0162 to pull the keeper into line with a latch that sits off center from door sag or a frame that was hung out of square. Beyond that range you are fixing the door, not the strike. The included 1/16 inch spacer addresses the other direction, adding latch engagement depth when the projection is at the shallow end of the 1/2 to 3/4 inch range.
9) How does a surface mount rim strike compare to a cutting-in electric strike for an aluminum storefront?
A surface mount unit like the 0162 sits on the face of the frame and needs no cutting, which is the deciding factor on aluminum storefront and on any existing frame you do not want to modify or cannot get a template into. Trade-off: it is visible, 1-3/4 x 9 x 3/4 inches of stainless on the jamb, and it only serves rim exit devices with a 1/2 to 3/4 inch latch projection. A mortised strike disappears into the frame but means cutting and, on an existing opening, a frame you may not be able to put back. If the opening already has a rim device and you are electrifying it after the fact, surface mount is the shorter path.
10) Does the RCI 0162 strike come with everything needed to mount it?
The box carries the 1/16 inch mounting spacer, hex socket head cap screws, and the hex key to drive them, plus plug-in wire connectors so the run lands without splicing at the strike. What is not in the box is the power supply and the wire to it, plus whatever transfer device gets power from the frame into the strike location. Budget those separately when you quote the job.
