1) Will the RCI 4314 electric strike work with my cylindrical lockset, or do I need a mortise version?
It handles both. The 4314 takes cylindrical locks as well as mortise exit devices and mortise latch locks, and the latch cavity is enlarged so narrowline aluminum and centerline mortise locks fit, including 3-piece anti-friction latches. The one hard limit is latch projection: it accommodates 3/4 inch. If your latchbolt throws more than that, this is the wrong strike.
2) Is the RCI 4314 fail-safe or fail-secure, and what happens in a power outage?
Fail-safe. Cut power and the strike releases, so the door can be pushed open from the outside without a key. That suits egress-side and stairwell applications where people must get out or in when power drops, but it is the wrong choice if you need the opening to stay locked during an outage. For that, order a fail-secure strike instead.
3) What door thickness and frame cut-out depth does the RCI 4314 need?
Doors from 1-3/8 to 2-3/8 inches, which covers standard 1-3/4 inch commercial doors and thicker aluminum entrance stiles. The frame cut-out depth is 1-1/2 inches, which fits most aluminum and hollow metal or wood frame profiles. Measure the depth behind the existing strike prep before cutting, since a shallow frame is the usual reason a strike will not seat.
4) What voltage does the RCI 4314 run on, and does wiring polarity matter?
Two voltage builds are offered, 12 VDC and 24 VDC, so match it to the power supply already feeding the access control panel. The coil is non-polarity-conscious, so crossed wires will not damage it or stop it working. On the fail-safe build, AC or DC input is acceptable.
5) Does the RCI 4314 meet Grade 1 and UL requirements for a commercial security spec?
It is UL 294 Listed for access control and UL 1034 Burglary-Resistant Listed, and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1. That is the combination most commercial and institutional specs call out for an electrified strike. It is not fire rated, so do not use it on a labeled fire door opening.
6) Can I use the RCI 4314 on a fire rated door?
No. The 4314 is not fire rated, and a fail-safe strike unlocks on power loss, which a labeled fire door assembly cannot accept. For a fire door you need a fire rated, fail-secure electric strike that keeps the latch held at all times.
7) What faceplate comes on the RCI 4314 and will it cover my existing strike cut-out?
A 4-7/8 inch square corner faceplate. That is the common ANSI strike prep size for hollow metal frames, so it usually covers an existing square-corner cut without patching. If your frame has radius corner prep, the square corners will show at the edges and the opening may need filing or a different faceplate.
