RCI AS65 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the RCI A65 be used on a fire rated door?
No. The A65 is not fire rated, so it doesn't belong in a fire rated opening. For a rated door you need a fire rated electric strike, which is fail-secure only by definition (a rated opening has to stay latched), and it must be listed for use with the fire rated frame and lock you have.
2) What is the difference between the low profile and standard A65 strike body?
Profile is the choice you make against the frame you have. The A65 comes as a low profile body and a standard body; the low profile is the shallower body for frames where there isn't depth behind the prep, and the standard body is the normal-depth version. Both take the same field selectable fail-safe/fail-secure setting and the same 12 to 24V AC/DC power, so the profile decision is purely about frame cavity, not about function or wiring.
3) Does the RCI A65 strike come with a faceplate, or do I order that separately?
The A65 is the strike body only. It's a modular strike insert, which means the body is one order line and the faceplate that suits your frame is another. That's the point of the modular arrangement: you match the faceplate to the frame profile and door prep while the body, voltage and fail-safe/fail-secure behavior stay the same. Anyone standardizing a building on one strike body can stock A65 bodies and pull whichever faceplate the individual frame needs.
4) Do I need the latch monitor option on an RCI A65 electric strike?
Order the LM/KM latch/keeper monitor version if your access control panel or alarm system needs to know the door is actually secured, not just that the strike was released. The monitor reports latch and keeper position back to the head end, which is what you want on a healthcare, school or government opening where a door left on the latch has to raise a condition. If the strike is just being buzzed open from a reader with no supervision required, the version without a monitor switch is the one to order. Both the low profile and the standard profile body can be had with or without it.
5) Will an RCI A65 strike body fit an existing RCI 6 Series strike installation?
Yes, the A65 is built for 6 Series compatibility, so it goes into an existing 6 Series installation as the body. That's the retrofit path when a 6 Series strike has failed or when a fail-secure opening needs to be converted to fail-safe: the body swaps and the field selectable setting handles the function change. Verify the faceplate you have matches the profile of the body you order, low profile or standard.
6) Should I set an electric strike to fail-safe or fail-secure on an exterior entrance?
Fail-secure is the usual call on an exterior door: the strike stays locked when power drops, and free egress comes from the lock's own inside lever or panic hardware, not from the strike. Fail-safe releases on power loss, which is what you want where the door has to open for egress or where a controlled door must not trap people during an outage. Because the A65 is field selectable, you can make that call on site rather than at the order desk, and change it later if the AHJ or the security plan changes. Note the A65 is not fire rated, so it isn't the device for a rated opening in either mode.
7) How strong is the RCI A65 electric strike?
UL Listed at 1500 lbs static strength. That is the pull the keeper resists with the strike in the locked state, and it puts the A65 in commercial territory rather than light-duty interior use. It is a commercial-rated device, not a residential one.
8) How many order options are there on the RCI A65 modular strike body?
Four combinations, and both decisions are made at order time. Profile is low or standard, and the monitor switch is either none or the LM/KM latch/keeper monitor. Every pairing of those two exists. Voltage and fail-safe/fail-secure are not order choices, since the single body covers 12 to 24V AC and DC and is set for fail-safe or fail-secure in the field.
