1) What crimping tool do I need for a Thomas & Betts E6-10 ring terminal?
Approved tools are the WT115A, TBM6, TBM6S and WT3185, with the TBM6S listed as the recommended one. It can be crimped with a single-indentor or double-indentor tool; double indentor is the recommendation when you are crimping solid wire.
2) Can the E6-10 ring terminal be used on 600V circuits and in high heat?
It carries a 600V rating and a 150 degrees C temperature rating, with a UL 94 V-0 flammability rating. It is UL and CSA listed and RoHS compliant, which covers most commercial control panel, motor lead and equipment grounding work.
3) Is the E6-10 ring terminal insulated?
No. It is a non-insulated terminal with a brazed seam barrel, bare electro tin-plated copper. If the connection needs covering you have to add heat shrink or a separate insulating sleeve after crimping.
4) Will an E6-10 ring terminal clear a tight terminal block or crowded panel?
Published dimensions are A 1.13 in., B 0.48 in., C 0.36 in., M 0.90 in., with stock thickness of 0.06 in. Use the 1.13 in. overall figure when checking lug-to-lug spacing on a crowded block, and the 0.06 in. stock when stacking two terminals under one #10 screw.
5) How are Thomas & Betts E6-10 terminals packaged for ordering?
Sold each, but they move in multiples of 20: inner pack is 20 and the outer carton holds 100. So an order gets rounded to the next multiple of 20. There is also an E26 alternate package quantity. They are not available on Mylar tape, so do not spec them for tape-fed automatic tooling.
6) Why pick a non-insulated brazed-seam ring terminal over a vinyl or nylon insulated one?
Two reasons drive it. Heat: the bare E-series terminal is rated to 150 degrees C, well past what a vinyl-insulated barrel tolerates, so it suits motor leads, heaters and engine compartments. Inspection: with a bare barrel you can see the crimp and the conductor. The trade-off is that you supply your own insulation, usually heat shrink. If the connection sits in open air on a low-temperature circuit and you want a color-coded wire-size indicator, an insulated ring is the easier choice.
7) Does the E6-10 hold on solid wire, or is it only for stranded?
It works with either. The barrel is serrated to increase grip on the wire, and for solid conductors Thomas & Betts calls for a double-indentor crimp rather than a single indentor. Match the tool to the conductor type and the 6 AWG size.
8) What does the weight work out to if I am ordering E6-10 terminals in bulk?
Thomas & Betts publishes 1.63 lbs per 100 pieces for the E6-10. A full 100-piece outer carton is therefore a little over a pound and a half of terminals, useful when you are estimating freight on a large panel build.
