1) What is the Rockwood 2601AB mounting bracket actually for?
It's a 5 inch aluminum bracket used when hardware is applied to the door stop or soffit above a pair of doors. Its job is to keep fasteners from passing through the coordinator housing, which is what jams a coordinator and disables it. If you're mounting a door holder, stop-applied closer arm, or similar hardware in the same run as a 2600 series coordinator, the bracket carries those fasteners instead of the coordinator body.
2) Will a 5 inch bracket be long enough for my door holder mounting footprint?
The 2601AB measures 5 inches long, which covers the fastener spread of typical stop-applied holders and arms mounted on the soffit. Check the hole pattern on the hardware you're mounting against that 5 inches before you order. If your hardware's mounting holes span more than 5 inches, this bracket won't pick up both fasteners and you'd be back to screwing through the coordinator housing.
3) Do I need a mounting bracket if I'm installing a coordinator on a pair of doors?
Only if something else is being fastened to the same soffit or stop as the coordinator. A coordinator on its own doesn't need it. The moment you add stop-applied hardware over that run, the mounting screws for that hardware want to go straight through the coordinator housing and bind the mechanism. That's the situation the 2601AB bracket exists for.
4) What finishes does the Rockwood 2601 mounting bracket come in?
Two: black and gray. Both are prime coat, so the bracket is meant to be painted to match the frame or stop rather than left as a finished surface. Since it sits on the soffit above the doors and is largely hidden by the applied hardware, most jobs just paint it out to the frame color.
