Rockwood 456 Straight Roller Stop

4-9/16 inches of projection, with a 2 inch diameter roller at the end of it. That number decides whether the stop actually catches the door before the two leaves meet, so measure from the mounting surface to where you want the door to come to rest before committing. If you need the door held further out than 4-9/16 inches, this is the wrong stop.

Three #8 x 3/4 inch oval head sheet metal screws ship with it. Sheet metal screws at 3/4 inch means the fasteners supplied are sized for a solid substrate, so for hollow drywall or a metal stud you will need your own anchors, toggles, or blocking behind the mounting point. Nothing else is required to complete the install.

ANSI A156.16, function L02191. A156.16 is the auxiliary hardware standard, which is the one your spec writer will reference for stops and holders, and L02191 is the specific function designation to put on the hardware schedule. If the drawing calls out L02191, the 456 is the part that satisfies it.

It is a commercial stop, cast brass with a rubber bumper on the roller. Solid cast brass rather than a formed or plated pot metal body is what carries repeated door contact in institutional traffic, and the rubber roller absorbs the strike rather than transferring it into the mounting screws. Rockwood specifies this class of hardware for schools, offices, retail, detention, hotels and sports facilities.

A flat wall bumper stops a door dead against a face, which works when the door swings into a wall. Where two doors swing toward each other at right angles, the leading edge arrives at an angle and a flat bumper takes the hit on a corner. The 456 uses a 2 inch rubber roller so the door edge rolls across it, which is why Rockwood lists this one specifically for right angle door-to-door conditions. For a door swinging into open wall, a plain bumper or a floor stop is the simpler buy.

Stopping only. The 456 is a roller stop, not a holder, so it limits how far the door swings and nothing more. If you need the leaf to stay parked open for moving carts or equipment through, you want a hold-open device such as a stop with a hook or a floor mounted hold-open, not a roller stop.

Standardizing is straightforward here because the 456 is a single configuration: model 456, US26D satin chrome, 4-9/16 inch projection, 2 inch roller, ANSI A156.16 L02191. There is no handing, no length choice, no thickness range to match. Order the same number for every right angle opening in the building and every unit is identical, and the ANSI function code gives your spec writer one line to schedule against.

It is supplied in US26D, satin chrome, which is the finish that matches the brushed chrome and satin stainless trim found on most commercial openings. The body underneath is cast brass, so the finish is plated over solid brass rather than over a zinc casting. If the rest of your door hardware is US26D or 630 stainless, the 456 blends in.
