1) Should I order a kick plate with screws or self adhesive backing?
Screws are the default on the K1050, which mounts with a #6 x 5/8 inch OH SMS, an oval head sheet metal screw. Order the SA option for self adhesive mounting when you do not want fasteners through the door face, TEK when you want self drilling screws that go straight into hollow metal without pre drilling, and CSK when you want countersunk holes so the heads sit flush. One caveat that decides it for you: on a fire labeled door, use the screw mounted K1050F, because that is the version carrying the UL listing.
2) What is the cross-brand equivalent of the Rockwood K1050 kick plate?
The Rockwood K1050 is a standard duty stainless steel kick plate in US32D satin stainless, carrying the ANSI/BHMA J102 classification. The closest equivalents from other manufacturers are the Hager 190S, a kick plate with a satin stainless steel finish and 4 beveled edges out of the Hager 190 Series, and the Ives 8400 Series stainless steel door protection plate with beveled edges. 4) What is the difference between B3E and B4E on a Rockwood kick plate?
It is the number of beveled edges. B3E bevels three, B4E bevels all four. B3E is the one to use when the plate sits down at the bottom of the door, where the lower edge is not exposed to a foot or a cart wheel; B4E is for a plate set up off the bottom rail with all four edges in the open. There is also HVBEV, a heavy bevel, for openings where carts hit the plate edge on and a standard bevel gets peeled up.
5) My door schedule calls for an ANSI J102 protection plate. Does the Rockwood K1050 satisfy it?
It does. The K1050 carries the ANSI/BHMA J102 classification and is a commercial grade stainless steel plate in US32D satin, so it answers a spec written for a J102 stainless protection plate directly. J numbers come out of the BHMA architectural door trim standard, which is why a schedule cites the letter and number instead of a size and material.
6) Can the Rockwood K1050 be used as a mop plate or a full armor plate?
Same plate, different height. The K1050 runs from a 6 inch height, which is the mop plate position at the very bottom of the leaf, through the 8, 10 and 12 inch kick plate heights, and on up to 30 and 34 inch plates that give armor plate coverage to about lock height. So a 6 x 34 protects against mop buckets and floor scrubbers, while a 34 x 34 or 34 x 40 is what you put on a receiving door or a corridor door that takes bed and cart impact well above the toe.
7) What are the alternatives to the Rockwood K1050 stainless kick plate?
Two other stainless protection plates cover the same job. 8) I need a stainless kick plate with beveled edges on all four sides. Does the Rockwood K1050 come that way or should I order the Hager 190S?
Either will get you there, the difference is how the bevel is specified. The Hager 190S is furnished as a satin stainless steel kick plate with 4 beveled edges as part of the model. On the Rockwood K1050, beveling is called out at order: B4E for four beveled edges, B3E for three, or HVBEV for a heavy bevel. The Ives 8400 Series stainless steel protection plate is likewise a beveled-edge plate. If the opening only wants three edges dressed, which is common where the plate runs tight to the hinge edge, the K1050 B3E is the one that covers it.
9) How do I stop a kick plate from being unscrewed on a public restroom or detention door?
Specify TORX and the K1050 ships with security Torx screws, which will not come off with the screwdriver in someone's pocket. Pair that with HVBEV, the heavy bevel, on doors that take real abuse. Rockwood lists detention along with institutional, educational and hospitality work among the places these plates go, so the security fastener option is a normal thing to order, not a special.
10) Will a Rockwood K1050 kick plate match the satin stainless hardware already on my doors?
US32D satin stainless is what the K1050 is finished in, and it is the standard commercial finish, equivalent to BHMA 630. It sits alongside satin stainless hinges, push and pull plates, exit device trim and stops without looking off. The plate is solid stainless steel rather than a plated base metal, so a scuff at the bottom of the door does not expose a different colour underneath.
