Rockwood K1062 4x35 US32D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Rockwood K1062 kick plate heavy enough for a hospital or school corridor door?
The K1062 is .062 inch stainless steel, which is the heavy duty gauge in Rockwood's plate line and is what gets specified for institutional buildings, schools, detention, hotels and restaurants. Thin decorative plates dent when a cart hits them; .062 stainless holds up to cart and foot traffic and cleans up in a corridor.
2) Does the Rockwood K1062 kick plate come with screws?
Fasteners are #6 x 5/8 inch oval head sheet metal screws. Those suit a hollow metal door. If you are mounting to wood or want to skip drilling pilot holes, specify the TEK option for self drilling screws. TORX gets you security head screws where the plate is in a public area and you do not want it removed with a common driver.
3) What is the closest equivalent to the Rockwood K1062 kick plate if I need one with beveled edges already done?
The Hager 190S is a kick plate in satin stainless steel with four beveled edges as part of how it is built, so the bevel comes as part of the part number rather than as something you call out. The Rockwood K1062 is a stainless steel plate where beveling is an option you specify when ordering - B3E for three beveled edges or B4E for four, with a heavy bevel available as HVBEV. Both land at the same place on a four-edge bevel; the difference is whether you specify it or it is inherent to the model.
4) The door I am plating has a lock and a louver in the way - does a standard Hager or Ives protection plate work, or do I need something else?
A stock plate such as the Hager 190S or the Ives 8400 Series comes as a plain rectangle of stainless, so anything projecting through the door face has to miss the plate. The Rockwood K1062 accepts cutouts for locks, louvers, or windows as a specified option, along with countersunk holes and self-drilling TEK screws, so the plate is made to clear what is already in the door. If the plate area is clear, the stock plates suit it; if it is not, the cutout option is what makes the difference.
5) Can I get a kick plate cut around the lock or a louver?
Yes. Cutouts for locks, louvers or windows are an option on the K1062, specified when you order along with the height, width and finish code. That matters on a mop plate or armor plate that runs up into the lock area, or on a door with a bottom louver where a solid plate would block the opening.
6) What is B3E versus B4E on a Rockwood kick plate?
B3E is beveled on 3 edges, B4E is beveled on 4 edges. Use B3E when the plate sits on the bottom rail and the bottom edge does not need a bevel; use B4E when all four edges are exposed, which is the usual call for an armor or mop plate mounted away from the door bottom. There is also a heavy bevel, specified HVBEV, where you want a more pronounced chamfer.
7) What does US32D mean on this kick plate and will it match my other door hardware?
US32D is satin stainless steel, the standard commercial finish that matches satin stainless levers, hinges, push plates and pulls across a building. If the rest of the openings in your facility are 32D, the K1062 will read the same. Note that 32D is a brushed finish, so it will not match a bright polished 32 plate on an adjacent door.
8) What do I have to specify when ordering a Rockwood K1062 kick plate?
Order it as height x width x finish code, then add any options. Options are TEK self drilling screws, CSK countersunk holes, cutouts for locks, louvers or windows, B3E or B4E beveled edges, HVBEV heavy bevel, and TORX security screws. Miss the options and you get a plain plate with standard holes and #6 x 5/8 inch oval head screws.
9) What is the difference between the Rockwood K1062 and a Hager or Ives kick plate?
All three are stainless door protection plates. The Rockwood K1062 is .062 inch stainless in US32D and is ordered with the bevel as an option (B3E or B4E). The Hager 190S from the 190 Series comes as a satin stainless plate with 4 beveled edges as part of the model, and the Ives 8400 Series is a stainless protection plate with beveled edges. If you want a fixed beveled configuration without specifying it, the Hager 190S or Ives 8400 do that; if you need cutouts, security Torx screws or a heavy bevel, the K1062 carries those options.
10) For a high-traffic institutional opening, does it matter which stainless protection plate I pick for security fasteners?
It matters if the plate is somewhere a plate can be pulled off. The Rockwood K1062 can be ordered with security Torx screws as a TORX option, and it ships standard with #6 x 5/8 inch oval head sheet metal screws. The Hager 190S and the Ives 8400 Series are stainless protection plates in the same duty family, so the plate material is comparable across all three - the fastener option is the piece that separates a plate you can spin off with a common driver from one you cannot.
11) Why would I pick countersunk holes (CSK) on a door plate?
CSK gives countersunk holes so the screw heads sit flush with the face of the plate instead of standing proud. That is what you want where carts, luggage or a mop bucket rake across the plate and a raised oval head would catch. The standard fastener is a #6 x 5/8 inch oval head sheet metal screw, so if flush is what the spec calls for, CSK has to be added to the order.
12) Is the Rockwood K1062 a residential kick plate or a commercial one?
Commercial. The K1062 is a .062 inch stainless plate built for institutional buildings, offices, retail, schools, detention, sports facilities, hotels and restaurants. It will go on a residential door, but the gauge and the satin stainless finish are specified for traffic a house does not see.
