Sargent SGT-C10X-1 LA 4 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Sargent 10X Line bored lock cylinder work on a 2-1/4 inch thick door?
Yes, but you have to order the right one. The standard 10X Line bored lock cylinders cover 1-3/8 inch through 2 inch doors. For a 2-1/4 inch door you need a 31- prefix model, which is the thick-door version of the same cylinder. Ordering the standard part for a 2-1/4 inch door leaves the tailpiece short and the lock will not operate.
2) Can Sargent 10X cylinders be keyed into an existing master key system?
They can. The 10X Line cylinders are part of Sargent's conventional key system, and master keying is handled by supplying the keying detail on SARGENT Keyed Order Lead Sheets with the order. If you do not supply keying, the cylinders arrive 1-bitted with 2 nickel silver keys, which is the blank state a locksmith pins to your existing system. You can also order KD for keyed different or KA for keyed alike.
3) What keyways can I get on a Sargent 10X Line cylinder?
Nine Sargent keyways: LA, LB, LC, LE, LF, LG, LJ, LK and LL. LA is the standard. If you are adding doors to a building already on Sargent, match the keyway stamped on your existing key bow or cylinder face, otherwise the new cylinder will not accept the keys already in your tenants' hands.
4) Is the Sargent 10X cylinder ANSI Grade 1?
The 10X Line bored lock cylinders are certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.5 Grade 1, with the exception of the hotel function cylinders. If you are writing a spec that calls for Grade 1 cylinders on a commercial opening, the standard mechanical and electrified versions meet it.
5) Do I have to buy a whole new Sargent lockset, or can I just replace the cylinder?
Just the cylinder. These are replacement parts for the 10X Line bored (cylindrical) locksets, so if the lock body and lever are sound and you only need to rekey to a different system, change a keyway, or swap a damaged plug, you order the cylinder alone. Sargent publishes a 10X Line parts manual that identifies the correct cylinder against the lock you have.
6) Are Sargent 10X bored lock cylinders 5-pin or 6-pin?
All 6-pin. That extra chamber over a 5-pin gives more usable key changes, which matters when you are building a master key system across a large building rather than keying a handful of doors. Each cylinder ships 1-bitted so your locksmith pins it to the system.
7) What is the difference between the hotel function (50) and the emergency release cointurn cylinder on Sargent 10X locks?
They solve two different guest-room problems. The hotel function (50) cylinder is the guest-room keying arrangement, and it is the one function in the 10X cylinder range that is not covered by the A156.5 Grade 1 certification. The emergency release cointurn cylinder (65) has no key at all on that side, it uses a coin-slot turn so staff can release a privacy-locked door from the corridor, which is what you put on restrooms and dorm-style doors rather than a keyed cylinder.
8) What finishes do Sargent 10X Line cylinders come in, and will they match my existing lever trim?
Three: 04 satin brass with clear coat, 15 satin nickel plated with clear coat, and BSP black suede powder coat. The cylinder face is what shows once installed, so match it to the lockset trim already on the door rather than to the door itself. If your building is standardized on 26D chrome, 15 satin nickel is the closest of the three in appearance but it is not the same finish designation.
9) Can I use a Sargent 10X cylinder in an electrified bored lock?
Yes. The 10X cylinder range covers electrified functions as well as the standard mechanical ones, and Sargent publishes separate installation instructions for the 10X Line electrified bored lock. The cylinder itself is the mechanical key override, so wiring and power supply are handled by the lock body, not the cylinder.
10) Should I order keyed alike or keyed different cylinders for an apartment building?
Keyed different (KD) for the individual unit doors, so no tenant's key opens a neighbor's door, and keyed alike (KA) where one person needs a single key for a group of openings, such as a maintenance closet set or the two leaves of an entry pair. Both are ordered as options on the 10X cylinders. If you need one key to open everything above the unit keys, that is master keying and it goes on a Sargent Keyed Order Lead Sheet with the order rather than being a KD or KA selection.
