Sargent 1431D-EN – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does a Sargent 1431D drop plate actually do on a door closer installation?
The 1431D is a mounting plate, not a closer. It bolts to the door or frame and gives the closer body a solid, correctly positioned surface to attach to when the available mounting area is too narrow or too short for the closer shoe to land on directly, which is common with narrow top rails or where a stop or glass edge limits the mounting area. It sets the closer at the right height and alignment so the arm geometry works as intended.
2) Is the Sargent 1431D drop plate suitable for a school or hospital corridor door, or is it a light-duty part?
It's a commercial part, built for high-traffic openings, and Sargent lists it for office buildings, schools, healthcare facilities, retail, industrial buildings, government buildings, and multi-tenant residential. For an MRO or institutional buyer standardizing on Sargent 1431 closers across a building, this is the plate that goes with them.
3) Do I need a drop plate when replacing an existing Sargent 1431 closer, or only on new installs?
Only if the mounting surface requires it. On a full-width top rail with a standard frame reveal the closer mounts directly. Order the drop plate when the closer shoe overhangs the rail, when you are reusing a door that had a plate on it before, or when you need to shift the closer down to clear the frame stop. Pull the old closer first and look at what it was fastened to, then decide.
4) What finish does the Sargent 1431D drop plate come in?
One finish: EN, sprayed aluminum enamel. That is the standard painted aluminum-look coating Sargent uses on closers, so the plate matches a 1431 closer ordered in EN. If your closers are in a plated or powder-coat finish, the plate will not match visually, though it mounts the same.
5) Is the Sargent 1431D sold as a replacement part on its own?
Yes, it's catalogued as a replacement part, so you can buy the plate by itself without buying a new closer. That's the usual case when a plate is damaged, painted over, or missing from a door that previously had one.
