Sargent 1431D ED – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Sargent 1431D ED drop plate actually do on a parallel arm closer install?
It is a mounting plate that gives a Sargent 1431 Series closer the correct offset when the closer body is mounted in the parallel arm configuration. The drop plate geometry lowers and positions the closer so the arm geometry works out, which is what you need when the frame face or stop area does not give you enough flat mounting surface for the closer body on its own.
2) Will the 1431D ED plate work with any Sargent door closer, or only the 1431 Series?
Only the 1431 Series. The 1431D ED is built for that family specifically, so if you are working on a different Sargent closer series, this plate is the wrong part. Match the plate to the closer series printed on the closer body before ordering.
3) What finish does the Sargent 1431D ED drop plate come in?
One finish only: 693 black painted. If your other openings are aluminum or brass finished closers, the black plate will read as a contrast, so on a visible frame face you may want to plan your closer finish around it rather than the other way around.
4) Do I need a drop plate for every parallel arm closer installation?
No. A drop plate is only required when the mounting surface will not take the closer body directly, typically where a narrow top rail, a deep stop, or existing frame conditions leave too little flat area. On a standard opening with adequate head or door top rail surface, the closer mounts without one. Order the 1431D ED when the parallel arm layout needs the extra offset.
5) Is the 1431D ED drop plate suitable for high traffic commercial doors?
Yes, it is a commercial-rated part, not a residential accessory. Sargent lists it for office buildings, schools, healthcare, retail, industrial and warehouse facilities, multi-tenant residential, and government buildings, which is the traffic profile the 1431 Series closer itself is meant for.
How fast can I get the Sargent 1431D ED delivered?
