Sargent 1431D EB – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Sargent 1431D drop plate actually do on a door closer install?
A drop plate lowers the closer body below the frame face so the parallel arm has the geometry it needs when soffit or frame mounting is not workable, typically on narrow top rails or where a stop or frame condition leaves no usable mounting surface. The 1431D is the parallel arm drop plate for Sargent 1431 Series closers.
2) Will the 1431D drop plate work with a Sargent 351 or other closer series?
It is built as a matched component for Sargent 1431 Series door closers only. Mounting hole patterns differ between closer families, so if the closer on the door is another Sargent series, order the drop plate listed for that series rather than the 1431D.
3) Do I need a drop plate for a regular arm or top jamb closer installation?
No. The 1431D is specific to parallel arm mounting, where the closer sits on the push side with the arm running back along the door face. Regular arm and top jamb installs use different mounting geometry and this plate is not the accessory for them.
4) When I order the 1431D, am I getting the closer too?
No. The 1431D EB is the drop plate alone, an installation accessory for the closer. The 1431 Series closer body, arm and any brackets are ordered separately.
5) What finish does the Sargent 1431D drop plate come in?
Sprayed Dark Bronze, which Sargent codes EB and which corresponds to 690 Dark Bronze on the standard finish scale. That is the only finish offered on the 1431D, so if the closers elsewhere in the building are aluminum or brass finished, the plate will read darker than the closer body.
6) Is the Sargent 1431D drop plate rated for commercial door traffic?
It is a commercial-grade installation accessory, catalogued by Sargent for commercial door closer work rather than residential use. Common applications are offices, schools, healthcare, retail, government buildings, warehouses and multi-tenant residential.
