1) Will a Sargent 34 rim cylinder fit my Sargent exit device?
The 34 Series rim cylinder is built for through-bolted Sargent exit devices, with a 27/32 inch (21mm) screw pattern and a horizontal tail piece so it engages the exit device mechanism correctly. If the device you're retrofitting uses a different screw spacing or a vertical tail, this is the wrong cylinder. Measure the screw center spacing on the cylinder you're pulling out before you order.
2) What keying do I get if I order a Sargent 34 rim cylinder without specifying anything?
Unspecified, the cylinder ships 1-bitted, meaning it comes with a single cut ready for a locksmith to pin to your system rather than keyed to a working key. If you want cylinders that operate on your existing keys, specify keyed alike or keyed different at the order, and give the keyway.
3) Is a rim cylinder the right part for my exit device, or do I need a mortise cylinder?
A rim cylinder like the 34 mounts from the back of the door with two through screws and drives a flat tail piece into the device, which is what surface-mounted rim and vertical rod exit devices take. A mortise cylinder threads into the lock body and uses a cam instead, which is what a mortise exit device or mortise lock needs. They are not interchangeable. If the cylinder you removed had a threaded body and a cam, the 34 is the wrong part.
4) I'm replacing a worn cylinder on a Sargent panic bar, not the whole device. Is this the part?
That's exactly what the 34 Series is for. It's a replacement cylinder for through-bolted Sargent exit devices, so the device, trim and rods stay on the door and only the keyed cylinder swaps out.
