1) Which Sargent C480 replacement cylinder do I order for a 454 or 474 deadbolt?
The C480-1 is the cylinder for 454 and 474 locks. The rest of the family splits the same way: C480-2 covers 455 and 7500DB, C480-3 covers 456 and 475, and pre-2016 464 and 465 locks take the C460 series cylinders. Pick by the lock model stamped on the existing hardware, not by the door.
2) My Sargent 450 series deadbolt is discontinued. Can I still get a cylinder for it?
Yes. These C480 Series cylinders exist specifically to keep discontinued Sargent 450, 460, 470 and 7500 bored deadbolt lines in service, so you can rebuild the lock instead of replacing the whole unit and re-prepping the door.
3) Can these Sargent C480 cylinders be put on the building's existing master key system?
They work on a master key system, but you have to supply the keying. Submit the keying details on Sargent Keyed Order Lead Sheets with the order. Without that instruction the cylinder ships 1-bitted with two nickel silver keys, which is a blank slate for a locksmith to pin to your system but not usable as delivered.

5) Is this a complete deadbolt or just the cylinder?
Cylinder only. It is a replacement part that drops into an existing discontinued Sargent 450, 460, 470 or 7500 bored deadbolt, supplied with two nickel silver keys. The lock body, bolt and strike stay in the door. If the bolt or housing is the problem, a cylinder will not fix it.
6) I have Sargent 464 and 465 deadbolts. Is the C480 the right cylinder?
Only if they predate 2016. Pre-2016 464 and 465 locks take the C460 series cylinder, and that is the option to select for those functions. A 464 or 465 built after that change is a different cylinder, so check the age of the hardware before ordering.
7) What does 1-bitted mean on a Sargent replacement cylinder, and do I need a locksmith?
1-bitted means the cylinder is pinned to a single throwaway cut rather than a working key change, so it is meant to be re-pinned to your keyway and system before it goes in the door. That is a locksmith bench job. If you would rather not touch it, order KD for keyed different or KA for keyed alike instead of standard keying.
