1) Will a Sargent C5500 cylinder work in my old 5 Line bored lock, and does the hotel function need a different one?
These 6-pin cylinders are made to service the discontinued Sargent 5 and 5500 Line bored locks. The function on the door decides which one you order: C5500-1 covers all functions except Hotel, and C5500-2 is the one that fits Hotel function (50) on 5 Line locks. Get that wrong and the cylinder will not operate the lock correctly.
2) Are these Sargent replacement cylinders ANSI Grade 1?
The cylinders carry ANSI/BHMA A156.5 Grade 1 certification, with the exception of the C5500 and C7600 models. A156.5 is the auxiliary lock and cylinder standard, so for a spec-driven job in a school, hospital or government building, note the exception before you write the submittal.
3) Can these Sargent cylinders be put on my existing master key system?
Yes. Master keying is supported when the keying details are supplied on SARGENT Keyed Order Lead Sheets. Without that, cylinders ship 1-bitted as standard. For a straight replacement that does not touch the masterkey system, use the KD option for keyed different or random keying, or KA to have a group keyed alike.
4) My Sargent 5500 bored locks are discontinued. Can I still repair them instead of replacing the whole lockset?
Yes, that is what this part is for. These are replacement cylinders kept available to service the discontinued 5 and 5500 Line bored locks, so a worn or compromised cylinder can be swapped without pulling the lockset off the door. That keeps existing openings on the same keying and avoids a full hardware change across a building.
5) What does 1-bitted mean and will I be able to use the cylinder right out of the box?
1-bitted is the factory default: the cylinder is pinned to a single test key so a locksmith can pin it to your system. If you want it usable as delivered, order KD (keyed different) or KA (keyed alike) instead. Either way each cylinder comes with 2 nickel silver keys, so there is no key cutting needed at install for the keyed options.
6) What finishes do these Sargent cylinders come in, and will they match my existing trim?
Three finishes: 04 satin brass with clear coat, 15 satin nickel plated with clear coat, and BSP black suede powder coat. All three are offered across every keyway. Match 15 to satin nickel or chrome-look trim, 04 to satin brass, and BSP where the existing hardware is a dark painted finish.
