Sargent SGT-C8-1 LA 4 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Sargent C8 cylinder work in my old 8 Line bored lock, or do I need a whole new lockset?
The C8-DISC cylinder is the replacement cylinder for Sargent 8 and 9 Line bored locks that are no longer produced, so a worn or re-keyed cylinder does not force you to replace the entire lockset. It is built to the dimensional requirements of those bored lock chassis. If the lock body itself is failing, the cylinder alone will not fix it, but for keying changes, lost-key situations, or a damaged plug, this is the part to order.
2) What is the difference between the Sargent C8-1 and C8-2 cylinder?
Function decides it. C8-1 covers every 8 and 9 Line bored lock function except Hotel, and C8-2 is the one made for Hotel function 50. Hotel locks work differently from a standard cylindrical lock (the guest key is shut out when the occupant throws the inside button, and only the emergency or shutout key overrides it), so the cylinder is not interchangeable with the all-function version. Order to the function of the lock on the door, not to the finish or keyway.
3) Which Sargent keyway do I order for a replacement cylinder, and how do I know which one my building uses?
Nine Sargent conventional keyways are offered: LA, LB, LC, LE, LF, LG, LJ, LK and LL. LA is the standard. The keyway has to match the section already in your master key system or the new cylinder will not accept the building keys, and in a facility running a masterkeyed system the keyway is usually stamped on the existing key bow or recorded on the original keying schedule. If you are not sure, pull an existing cylinder and compare the keyway before ordering.
4) Does a Sargent C8 replacement cylinder come keyed, and can I get it keyed alike to my other doors?
Standard supply is 1-bitted with two nickel silver keys, which means it ships with a temporary cut that a locksmith re-pins to your system. Three keying choices are offered: standard keying, KD for keyed different, and KA for keyed alike, so a run of doors that all need to open on one key can be ordered that way. For cylinders that have to fold into an existing master key system, Sargent coordinates that through their Keyed Order Lead Sheets.
5) Is the Sargent C8 bored lock cylinder a 6-pin, and will it take my 6-pin masterkeyed system?
Six pins, which is what a masterkeyed commercial system normally needs. A 5-pin cylinder cannot carry the extra chamber a master key wafer requires, so the 6-pin build is what lets these drop into a facility running masters and sub-masters. It is a conventional Sargent key system cylinder, not an interchangeable core.
6) What finishes does the Sargent C8 cylinder come in for matching existing door hardware?
Three finishes: 04 satin brass clear coated, 15 satin nickel plated clear coated, and BSP black suede powder coat. In practice you match the cylinder collar to the lock trim already on the door, so 15 goes with satin nickel and satin chrome-family trim, 04 with brass, and BSP with black hardware. On an older building where the existing locks have aged, matching the original spec number rather than the visual appearance is the safer call.
7) Is the Sargent C8 cylinder ANSI Grade 1?
Grade 1 to ANSI/BHMA A156.5, which is the top commercial grade for auxiliary locks and cylinders and the level most institutional and government specifications call for. That matters on a retrofit: swapping in a lower-grade cylinder can drop the whole opening below the grade the original lockset was specified at, even though the lock body never changed.
8) I manage a hotel with Sargent locks on the guest rooms. Can I standardize on one replacement cylinder for the whole property?
Not on one part number, no. Guest room doors running Hotel function 50 take the C8-2 cylinder, while corridor, back-of-house, and office doors on other 8 and 9 Line functions take C8-1. What you can standardize is the keyway and finish across both, so hold one keyway (LA is the standard section) and one finish, then stock the two function versions. Keying alike is available where a group of doors should share a key.
9) Is this Sargent cylinder for a bored lock or a mortise lock?
Bored lock. The C8 is the cylinder that fits the 8 and 9 Line cylindrical bored lock chassis, and it is not a mortise cylinder. A mortise lock uses a threaded-shell cylinder that screws into the lock case and drives a cam, so the two are not interchangeable. If you are pulling a threaded cylinder out of a lock case that sits inside the edge of the door, you need a Sargent mortise cylinder instead.
10) Do I get keys with a Sargent C8 replacement cylinder or do I have to order those separately?
Two nickel silver keys come with each cylinder. Nickel silver is the normal material for a commercial change key because it wears better in a high-cycle lock than brass. Bear in mind the cylinder ships 1-bitted, so those keys work the temporary factory cut, not your building key. Once a locksmith re-pins the cylinder to your system, they will be cut to the new combination or replaced with keys from your existing stock.
