1) Will the Sargent 7300B small format core fit any small format interchangeable core housing, or only Sargent?
The 7300B is a Sargent small format keyed core, part of Sargent's conventional key system, and it is meant for use with compatible Sargent cylinder assemblies and lock hardware. Treat it as a Sargent-system core: verify the housing you are pulling it into is Sargent before you order. It ships as a core only, so the housing, lock, or exit device trim it drops into has to already be there.
2) Should I order the 6-pin or the 7-pin Sargent small format core?
Match the pin count to the master key system already running in the building. The 7300B core comes in 6-pin and 7-pin, and the two are not interchangeable in a keying system: 6-pin cores work under the 6282BMK master key, 7-pin cores under the 7282BMK. A 7-pin gives you more room for levels of masterkeying in a larger facility; a 6-pin is what most existing Sargent conventional systems are built on. If you are adding to an existing system, ask the locksmith who holds the key records which one the site is on.
3) Does the Sargent 7300B core come with keys, or do I have to order those separately?
Two nickel silver change keys come with each core. That is enough to hand one to a tenant and keep one on the ring. What does not come with it is the master key or the control key, those are ordered on their own: 6282BMK or 7282BMK for masters, 6282BCTL or 7282BCTL for control keys.
4) I am rekeying a whole building, do I order these keyed alike or keyed different?
Keying is a required choice on the 7300B core, and there are three ways to take it: standard keying, KD (keyed different, every core on its own key), or KA (keyed alike, all cores in the order operating on one key). Apartment or tenant doors go keyed different. A run of doors one person needs to open with a single key, a mechanical room and its adjacent closet, a suite of offices for one tenant, goes keyed alike. Cores ordered on separate purchase orders will not be keyed alike to each other unless the keying is specified against the same system.
5) Do I need a control key to swap a Sargent 7300B small format core?
Yes for the removal itself. A small format interchangeable core is pulled and seated with a control key, not the change key, which is the whole point of the format: the core comes out in seconds without taking the lock apart. The control key is a separate order, 6282BCTL for 6-pin systems or 7282BCTL for 7-pin. If your facility already runs Sargent conventional cores you almost certainly have one on site.
6) What finishes does the Sargent small format keyed core come in, and will it match my existing lever trim?
Two: 04 satin brass with a clear coat, and 15 satin nickel plated with a clear coat. Only the core face shows once it is seated, so on a lock in US26D chrome or 626 satin chrome trim, the 15 satin nickel core reads as the closer match, and on brass or bronze trim in the 605/606 family, the 04 satin brass does. Both pin counts are offered in both finishes.
7) Can I order the Sargent core already installed in the lock instead of loose?
Either way works. The 7300B can be bought as a loose core, which is what you want when you are rekeying doors that already have Sargent hardware, or specified with the hardware itself using the 73- option code so it arrives assembled. On a new construction order, the 73- prefix on the lock line saves the installer a step. On a rekey, buy the cores loose.
8) Can I mix 6-pin and 7-pin Sargent cores in the same master key system?
No. A 6-pin core operates under the 6282BMK master and a 7-pin under the 7282BMK, and the control keys split the same way. A single master key will not carry across both. If a building is standardizing, pick one pin count and hold to it across every opening, otherwise a maintenance tech ends up carrying two masters and two control keys.
9) What is a small format interchangeable core and why would I use one instead of a standard mortise or rim cylinder?
A small format core is a figure-eight shaped key plug that lifts out of the lock with a control key, so rekeying a door means swapping the core rather than repinning a cylinder or replacing the lock. That is why facilities with turnover, student housing, medical offices, multi-tenant buildings, standardize on them: one person with a control key can rekey a floor in an afternoon. A conventional mortise or rim cylinder is threaded into the lock and has to be pinned by a locksmith.
